'Better than George Best at 12 he was told by one scout'

Seemed like he had a good head on his shoulders at 13yo (end of the video)

Scored 10 goals in 15 games for New Zealand..

Two broken legs scuppered his career before a cruciate injury finally putting an end to it.

Joe Cole was always touted as a future superstar. He had a decent career but never global superstars levels.

As Marv and Diego will testify, I've always had reservations about how far Foden will go. He's 23 soon, and whilst he is a very good player, I'm still not sure he will reach the levels some expected him to. Admittedly my flippant suggestion that he'd end up at Crystal Palace hasn't happened either (yet!).

Phil Foden, will be similar to Paul Scholes. Fellow professionals and managers will always rate him, but because he’s not a massive goal scorer, doesn’t go on mazy dribbles beating 6 players at a time and doesn’t hit 70 yard passes, fans will think he was decent and nothing more.

Similar to carrick that regard.

Probably a fair suggestion, although since he retired (and because fellow professionals and managers have always rated him) it does feel as though fans perceptions of him has grown and grown since he retired.

He was an exceptionally good player for United in my view, never as good for England (similar to many others of the era), and before anyone says it, he only played one tournament on the left wing (and if you watch his appearance on Soccerbox, he himself says he enjoyed playing on the left for United and that some of his best performances were there).

Probably a fair comparison with Foden, though Foden was touted as being potentially better than that 5 years ago.

Still only 33.. could have been an older Lewis Wing
I remember He wore bright pink/orange boots at york away in the preseason friendly it was so obvious he was just trying to catch the scouts eyes.
He was an idiot and poorly led I actually know some inside info ( that I won’t go into on here) but he was very foolish to burn the bridges he did chasing the big move.

Saw him on loan at Darlington in 2009, I remember looking forward to seeing our highly rated prospect in action.. after seeing a criminally disinterested display the writing was on the wall. Amazing that his contract was cancelled by mutual content! (February 2010)

Behind Adam Johnson in the pecking order and had a good playing relationship with Jonathan Franks by all accounts.. what could have been eh! Probably the most disappointed I’ve been seeing an academy prospect seemingly throw away a decent professional career.

Wonder how many ever watched Harry Charlton in the stiffs at Boro ... he only played 10 games in the first team from 68 - 76 ... Dr Neil Phillips mentions him in his book at great potential even mentions Alf Ramsey keeping tabs on him but he froze when he stepped over the white line in big crowds....

Dalian Atkinson. Remember him scoring a hat-trick against us mid 80's. was only about 17. What a sad end for him as well.
