Hi-fi System help

Looking to purchase my first HiFi in literally about 25 years and have no idea where to start.

Looking for something a little old school with turntable, radio, cd and cassette but haven’t a clue where to start.

Not wanting to pay a fortune either so if anyone has any suggestions or pointers to websites etc I’d really appreciate it. TIA.

Depending on what you're after try these

Hifisound Limited

Castlegate Mill, Quayside Rd, Stockton-on-Tees TS18 1BZ

They also have a substantial stock of 2nd hand stuff website's

Got some good stuff there and they kitted my recently graduated son out with aThorens turntable, an amp and a pair of good speakers (all 2nd hand) for not a great amount of money. Top end you could be paying £30,000 for a stereo amp, so chances are there'll be something there for you. Smashing people as well.

Thanks I’ll have a look over and see if anything suits 👍

What's a cassette? :)

Seriously though depends on your budget and what size room you're using - whatever you've got to spend dictates where to look.

New Marantz amp, CD player, Audio Technica turntable & decent speakers you're looking at ~£2000 for an system that's a bit more than entry level

I usually go to Lintone Audio in Gateshead. They have entry level stuff up to very high end. Just looking at prices, I got a Rega 3 turntable for £270 about 4 years ago, but it's double the price now!

Thanks for all the messages - it's something entry level I am interested in rather than high end. Browsing random sites I came across this which seems to do everything I want and more but never heard of the brand. It seems like a lot of hifi for the money, but I'm guessing it'll probably not be much cop. Here is the link if anyone with more knowledge than me can have a look it? Thanks :)

If thats your budget then thats what you're looking at but I can't imagine it sounds any good at all - if cassettes are important to you then its another plus I guess

Go to a hifi shop and listen. What you may end up doing is buying three bits then adding later as you'll find there is a difference by paying s bit more, but diminishing returns in terms of value as you go higher end.

I bought my TV room surround sound system form SuperFi, they were pretty helpful and seemed to have some good deals etc. Richer Sounds in Boro might be worth a shout, I have always had good service there.

You could easily disappear down a very expensive rabbit hole here. Good luck.

That's what I'd do. Get an amp, speakers and whatever source you have the most of, LP's, CD's (cassettes 😗 ) as a starter. You'll be spreading your limited budget really thin if you try and get everything at once.

Yep but it's all about your budget - the latest Marantz amp is getting rave reviews and that is £499 but if that's of reach then you need to compromise and aim lower/second hand.

If you go down the separates route then a rough rule of thumb is to spend roughly the same amount on each item but listening is vital

I am looking to get back into Vinyl again predominantly and the cassette is the least important element out of it all. My budget is probably anything up to around £500 as while I love music, I'm tone deaf and to be honest sound quality sounds the same on the CD player in my car, on my phone and on radio so it doesn't need to be mega expensive, high quality stuff.

Really just looking to get a reasonable system that's going to do what I need but don't want anything unreliable.

That makes it easier for you then - that all in one system you linked may just do the job or if you don't mind gambling there's loads of second hand stuff on line on ebay, Marketplace etc

Do not buy that all in one system, the turntable will 100% wreck your records.

I managed to put together a really nice sounding set up with amp, speakers and turntable for around £600.

speakers - Celestion ditton 15's vintige from the 60's took a bit of shopping around but they sound good, look good and come in at £100.
Amp - bit of a bargain thanks to sammy smiths on here, picked up a rocksan kandy amp for £150.
Turntable - Thorens this was the only thing I bought brand new had good reviews and a trusted brand. £300

As somebody said above, whatever you have more of cd's or lp's I'd build a system which you can play the most on. Then add to it as you save some money. This way with good build and a bit of investment your system will last for years, rather than having to update some crappy system every couple of years.

You can't go wrong with those Dittons - an absolute bargain!

They are little beauties. We've got two sets in the house as got my partner some for her birthday before we moved in together, then moved mine in. Been tempted to upgrade them but for the size of room and the music we listen too they're just really good so doesn't seem worth it. Got to go XL's though.
