Team tonight - back five

Sorry Block21 for stealing your thunder!

From the Guardian:

Apparently there are reports elsewhere that Southgate has named his lineup today today and it will entail a reversion to a back five, with Bukayo Saka dropping out so that Kieran Trippier can come in at right wingback. That suggests an effort to disrupt Italy’s midfield.

Presumably will look something like:

Pickford
Walker - Stones - Maguire
Trippier - Rice - Yorkshire Pirlo - Shaw
Mount
Kane - Sterling

I quite like it.

Surprising! But yeah the usual leak has claimed this is the team. Suppose we have to trust Southgate!

Yeah, well we’ve questioned it before and he got it right.

we do look defensively very solid using that formation usually, plus we used it against Germany and still scored 2, so i guess we can’t say it’s too negative. It allows shaw to push up at times too and he’s been great in those areas. Trippier on set pieces is obviously a bonus too.

I wasn’t expecting a change of formation actually but they obviously they have a clear plan on how it can work effectively, so I’m not too bothered.

The obvious weakness for Italy is their lack of pace at the back with 2 older lads in there, Sterling is free just to run channels and Kane won’t be expected to drop in

So looks like the clean sheet, is the main priority, relying on a set piece, piece of magic.
I think most people expect a very tight game anyway, so i can understand trying to go for the extra bit of insurance at the back.

plus as I said before, we put 2 past Germany with the back 5. Yet only scored 2 in the group stage using the 4 at the back.

I don’t think it’s particularly any less attacking if the wing backs are willing to get forward and have quality.

Think he might throw a curve ball with Grealish in for Mount. with the extra defender you can get away with it.
I can’t see it, he seems to be seen as an impact sub, coming on and running at tired defenders, a bit of a luxury, hence was the sub who was subbed.

We wouldn't need to play with a back five if our two holding midfielders did their jobs properly. The amount of space they conceded to Denmark was frightening.
The holding midfielders have been fine. We've only conceded one goal and that was from a set piece.
Five at the back isn't necessarily more defensive.

I think it's about a) nullifying their pace up top, by getting Walker central, to deal with it,
b) outnumbering them in midfield by pushing our fullbacks up and therefore stopping them gaining lots of possession , and
c) getting Raheem central, against their slow CBs rather than their faster FB s. It also means that Italy dare not push their defence up high and compress play in our half. If they try that it just takes one ball over the top and Italy are in trouble.

When attacking Italy play a 3-2-5 with the left back pushed high and the right back tucked alongside the centre backs.

The thinking must be to match the 5 up when England haven't got the ball. Phillips and Rice match up the two midfielders and Kane drops deep to provide am overload and probably stop Jorginho dictating.

England can play several systems so it wouldn't surprise me if they switch again.

surely mount would drop? Unless he is playing left of a 3?

Do you think Mount will play? I can't see Sterling starting from the right immediately and Mount doesn't offer the pace that someone like Sancho does.

the team that was listed earlier had him, not sure I would play him though, would prefer Sancho, Saka or Grealish, but maybe he has another tactic none of us have spotted.

Mount will drop then you're right. I wouldn't at him in a 3-4-3 either, but I guess it potentially prevents the Italian midfield three dominating.

Mount can’t play on the right he’s completely ineffective their if we are playing with 5 at the back he has to drop mount, we need pace wide so should be saka or sancho
