Wayne Rooney - showing integrity and class

Rooney is a character that divides opinion, despite every stat showing what a great player he was there are those who’ll maintain he was overrated, I think those same people are desperate for him to fail as a manager too, I understand some of his decision making in his personal life have been dubious but his football career in the main was exemplary, he wasn’t blessed with god given talent but from an early age worked and learned until he became the player who broke a load of records at both club and country level.

He’s done a great job in extremely difficult circumstances at Derby, and done so with dignity and maturity, he could become that rare breed of person who has an elite career both on the pitch and in the dug out.

No matter what we all thought of him previously it would be churlish to suggest that he hasn’t behaved in an utterly professional and dignified manner. It’s a shame that bellend Morris didn’t as they could have been looking up the league instead of going out of it.

He's done well and it would have been so easy for him to walk away.
But he's no angel.... any man that rattles hookers when he has a wife and young kids at home has low moral fibre IMO.
I hope that's all behind him for the sake of his kids.

I think some (me) would argue he never really done it at the Euros or World Cup stage and they couldn’t give a toss about what he does now.

I think I have to take you to task there. He very definitely "did" it at Euro 2004

I was fully expecting that reply. Is one four goal tournament enough at the the biggest stage? I don’t think so. In 21 games at tournament football he scored 7 goals. 4 of which were in 2004. Post 2004 in 17 games he scored 3. Whilst swearing down the Steadicam mic/lens about the England support is South Africa.

He has conducted himself well @ Derby.

Also he has correctly stated in public that Mel Morris is cause of Derby's problems.

Edited my reply, I could have said at the World Cup. But I personally don’t think he has done it at tournament level for England.

Maybe he turned down the interview because he thought he should just have been offered the job
Nah.

The lad is going a good job in difficult circumstances and is learning every week.

As it stands, he can’t lose… Get relegated and it’s due to ownership issues, stay up and he’s a Derby hero and could realistically pick any club outside the Top 6 to manage if a vacancy arises.

Why would he give that up to go to a club almost as backwards as Derby where he’s likely to get the bullet at some point in the near future from the fruit loop of an owner and struggle to get another job at that level again.

Great decision from Rooney.

England's top goalscorer so far.
Second most capped England player so far.
Second highest goal scorer in the premiership so far.
Everton - Success
Manchester United - Success
DC United - Success
Derby County - Worst possible move for him but still a success.
I don't like the person the media has reported him to be.
But as far as football is concerned there are very few better.

I'd dispute he wasn't blessed with God given talent. At his peak (early-mid 20s) there was only Ronaldo and Messi better than him, he was incredible. I'm sure he worked hard too, but you don't get to the level of 3rd best player in the world without natural ability.

Rooney was a brilliant footballer and I find it incredible that many couldn't see that.
It doesn't surprise me that he's doing a good job, he's played at the highest level and knows what it takes to succeed.
Probably right to avoid Everton at the moment. That first high profile job is so important. Get it wrong and you probably won't get another shot at it

Terrific player, no doubt about it. Doing a great job at Derby. I don’t care what newspapers say, never met him so no idea what he is like.
credit where it’s due.

I'm slightly less impressed if I'm honest, if he taken the interview and not been given the job, then his position at Derby would be damaged, especially given their current predicament.

I think it was the smart move, but it's a much about himself as it is anything else.
