Congrats to the Lionesses ...

How can it not be as impressive, they won the euros, what more could they do?

Hardly a shocker that the mens game which has had billions thrown at it and is accessible to almost everyone will have higher viewing figures than a sport that wasnt even shown on tv a few years ago
Both tournaments were shown on terrestrial television. Both tournaments were equally accessible to watch to the country. The reason three times more people watched the mens tournament is because there is far more interest in it. Lets not pretend its for any other reason.

I'll refer you to a previous post of mine. Is a male Olympic gold more worthy than a female one?

And, interestingly, I found myself having more of an emotional attachment to this side than say the golden generation of Beckham etc, much as I have with the current England men's team
Yes, in a way it is. The winner of the men's 100m is the fastest person in the world. The winner of the women's is nowhere near.

That isn't to disparage women's sport, it is merely fact. Men's sport is the pinnacle, any category that excludes elite men is not whether that be gender, age, disability etc.

We don't need to mix the two things up though. They can stand on their own.

I've enjoyed the whole tournament. The football in the main was enjoysble,
skillfull and exciting. The goal that Toone scored this evening was of the highest quality, the pass was of the highest calibre and to take that lob on took guts and a lot of skill. Deserved winners in a competitive euro's.
I agree with all of this. It was an excellent finish. She'd have scored more than Connolly did for us last season with that sort of finishing. That doesn't mean we have to combine the stats/records/achievements etc.

Weirdest comment from the commentary team was about the attendance record being the biggest including the mens euros.

Well the fact it was only 40% open due to covid might have been an issue.

That claim is an impossible one to make but you try regardless.
I'm not trying anything, it was context you seemed, like a few others on here, to be missing. I can't be bothered arguing the point any more. This thread has highlighted who a few of the misogynists and general miserable gets are. I'm off to bed. Have at it chap, enjoy your evening.

That is the crux of it. When watching sport people generally want to see the very best compete against one another.

Thats the reason why more people watch premier league football than championship football and more people watch championship football than league one football and so on and so on.

No, a mens Olympic gold is really not anymore impressive than that of a woman's

I’m not sure how many people are saying woman’s football is the same as mens. They are two different sports in my view and stand alone. I enjoyed tonight (probably the semi-final more) but I have much more interest in mens football. That’s just how I feel. It’s easy to compare the two but I don’t think that is fair.

so you mean the best womens top league playing against each other or the best northern league teams playing against each other?
or do we all just wait all year for Liverpool to play Man City and watch shaft all else

Of course it was more than the men’s as the stadium was only partially open due to to covid so it’s a moot point.

But do you ever hear of a womens Olympic gold being compared to a mens Olympic gold eg woman wins first Olympic gold, a man last won an Olympic gold in tha same event 32 years ago, do they get compared? No, they don’t. It doesn’t mean they should be celebrated any the less. They are just simply different events so shouldn’t be compared. To compare is wrong. They deserve recognition in their own right. It’s not hard to understand that surety?

The women have made history tonight and it should be rightly celebrated, I have certainly celebrated it. However, it doesn’t end 50 whatever years of hurt in the men’s game, they are totally different sports . Plus, the womens achievement deserve recognition and celebration in its own right, not as a comparisons to the mens game. It is a fantastic achievement! To link to the mens Game does the achievement an unnecessary disservice.

Mens sport is mens sport; womens is womens. They are not the same. They are not and never should be compared. To win in either is a fabulous achievement. It really isn’t hard to contextualise it.

Well done lionesses. Celebrate that! Fabulous stuff!

Edit: and I’m half cut having celebrated a fantastic sporting achievement for the nation. I can’t believe the nonesense on this thread to be honest.

I’ve enjoyed watching them like I do with every major tournament they’re involved in since the 2011 WC, but I don’t watch any of the league games. I just have no interest in it, and that’s fine.

Even if Boro had a team in the WSL I’m not sure how much interest I would have in going to games, there’s only so much time you can dedicate to following a team, never mind two!

This is not a time for compare and contrast. There’s plenty of time to do that if that does it for you.

Bottom line is, the England ladies have won a major competition in their field. I think that is a cause to congratulate them!

Well done and hats off to all concerned in my opinion, a tremendous achievement that warrants respect and admiration.
