Matthew Hoppe

Gyokeres is exactly the striker we need I think they’d snap our hands off for £8M plus say £3M in promotion and goals based add ons. He’d be worth that and maybe a tad more. He would be ideal for our style pressing from the front.
8mil for Gyökeres? Absolutely no chance. I imagine you'd need double (despite them wanting 25mil).

Imagine he played for us. Nobody would be happy selling him for 8mil
I can't see him going to any champo side. He's probably been priced out of any move. I also don't see why he'd want to stay in the same league. Its a prem move or another season at Cov most likely.

Pretty sure a european team were quoted £8M-£10M early doors for him, they will take near my price toward end of window if offered i reckon, nowt to lose by trying anyway. I think the high figure he quoted waswas for some Congolese hot shot striker at Adana Demirspor.
He specifically said championship striker?

I think we’ll be waiting until deadline day to see if we can tempt to pry away an under-performing striker in the Prem or one of the other top European leagues.

From Wilder during the Spence sale and price of players chat....

“We’re a reasonable football club, but some of the numbers you sometimes get quoted are ridiculous and we’re not going to allow anyone to take advantage of us. We got quoted £20-25m for a forward playing in the Championship recently, but we didn’t think that was a fair number. We’re prepared to pay fair numbers, as we always have done, but we’re not going to be silly, and we’re certainly not going to be giving our players away for a fee we don’t think is right. Ultimately, Djed’s our player."

Mitrovic might have been higher but I can't think of many others we'd enquire about who their club might go that high for.

It was a report stating what Besiktas allegedly were quoted originally. A quick google came up with this, obvs not reliable in any way but it stated the source of that figure. No harm in trying the worst is a no. We could throw Chuba and Uche in for free.

Brereton-Diaz?

Brereton-Diaz scored more goals last season

I like to see the Djed Spence money used on buying him, if a Premier Club don't bid for him.

Nobody knows who Wilder was referring to.
Mitrovic, Piroe, Brereton Diaz, Gyokeres.
Or flying a kite.

Gyokeres is exactly the striker we need and we could go get him.

Chris Wilder must be pulling his hair out with rage. It’s the same every season. We have long protracted transfer saga’s that almost always end in failure and last minute panic buy. We are so slow and so poor at getting deals done. So many times we identify a target only to take so long someone has the opportunity to swoop in and gazump us. It’s been like this for years now. We get in three or four early but our big needs where we have the glaring gaps we mess about and leave our managers strung out to dry. Yes other clubs will influence things but we seem really poor at pushing deals through and we are paying for it big time again and again.

What's happening with Hoppe has now made me question whether it is a case of the club being too stringent, in the sense of them haggling to try and get the cheapest deal possible, only for it to end with us being pipped at the post by another club.

In recent years I've been reluctant to blame our recruitment team for missing out on players to other clubs, but I'm now seriously beginning to wonder if it is down to how we operate in terms of negotiating for players.

Aand I’m glad because on judging this player’s record so far is such that any acquisition seems to me to be nothing more than a big punt. Caution is wise.

I'd have said the same thing a month or so ago but Gayle and Armstrong were at the top of my wishlist. That ship has sailed unfortunately.

I'd also be happy with Jakobsen, who would cost less but I'd also be happy for the club to bid for Gyokeres.

If we sign a proper goalscorer this season we will be in with a real shot of promotion. Having Jones and Giles supplying the crosses will be a dream for good strikers at this level.

How do we know we haven't tried? I suspect we probably have.

If Gyokeres is the one we were quoted £20m+ then it's pointless offering them less than half that.

We've no idea how much the club might have been willing to pay, but would appear whatever that would be is nowhere near what Coventry are asking and so we seem to have moved on.

if he was available for £8m he'd be linked with a raft of clubs. I don't think he's linked with anyone at the minute? Presumably because the valuation has put everyone off.

I am certain we have asked, The lack of concrete reporting suggests we haven’t tested their resolve or the players. He has allegedly said he prefers a PL move, understandably. Time changes things. Incomings may change the players thoughts if no PL team comes in. As Indeedido rightly states nobody knows who that alleged £20M player was, but the talk from Besiktas would suggest it wasn’t Gyokeres.

Coventry would naturally inflate a price if they don’t need to sell, yet we didn’t with Tav in my opinion. I can’t believe as the window draws ever nearer shutting a potential £11M (inc add ons) and a better chance of getting to the PL might start to tempt them and the player. Crikey we could include a % sell on fee too that costs us nowt in truth. We can be creative to entice both him and Coventry. Those type of add ons, goals and promotion based, would be more achievable than the reported Tav ones too.

Of course it is all ifs and buts and maybe’s, we will never likely ever know what discussions, if any have taken place, I am certain Gyokeres is the best we can afford and that Gibson should do all he reasonably can to get him. If he has done and Coventry, and to be fair the player, don’t bite, so be it. Given the need for other positions, then yes it needs to be balanced with affordability, hence the emphasis on the achievability of add ons and sell on fees.

Most supporters keep saying he is a gamble a one good season player (so far), which is true and that has to be reflected in the up front price. If we get to the promised land and he bags us goals Coventry would be £££ in too. Tav had 2 yrs on his contract has been more than a one season player and has gone for just £10M to a PL team. I think Coventry probably quoting inflated fees in case a PL team comes sniffing. I do feel they would be willing to seriously consider a 700% to 1000% profit on him if no PL offer comes. If a PL team comes in, we have no chance, but lets aim high (and yes we may have), where there’s hope etc 🤷‍♂️

If he's £12 million and £35k a week and Riis is £6 million and £18k a week, is Gyokeres the 'best' for the club though?

He's good, but is it worth committing to that much? Would he be twice as good as Riis would for us?

O'hare is meant to be injured now which means a move to Burnley is off the cards/postponed - so if they 'needed' to sell one of their two gems this summer to balance the books that may shift to Gyokeres. Interesting
