It's not a great position to be in but there is still a lot to be played for ahead of us. Most of you are quite sensible and must realise that we won't see our full potential until key midfield and defensive positions have been covered, so why get so worked up on the 10th August, I'm not going to blame CW for stuff that isn't his doing such as players going and the lack of incoming. Take deep breaths, have cold showers, get your heads sorted because it might get more turbulent before it starts to feel like we are on the up again. UTFTB

There's 21 points to play for in August. We can't afford to wait to start competing in September. We've already dropped 5 points. How far back is acceptable on 31st August?

I hate to disappoint you but those points as well as Septembers and Octobers may be a bit hit and miss, we are position now where we are hoping for a stronger last 2 thirds of a season, if the club buys right then it might be enough time not only for the playoffs but promotion as well.
If I and others were to still insist on getting worked up then who am I thinking whose fault is it, I don't get these fingers pointing at CW, if the club want to play hardball on negotiating then they have to accept targets may have moved on by the time they conclude the deal as well as suitable preparation time for the season.

We’ve kind of started off the season handicapped, I don’t think there’s no denying that. However if in 3 weeks time we have 5-6 new players who are of top quality status then I think the fans will buy into that philosophy. We could be in the bottom 6 by then but it’s a long season.

Agree entirely.
Some football fans cant see beyond the end of their noses, and rage if any manager doesnt procure a team which is an instant success. Managing men is a skill and takes time in any business / sport / relationship. Its the "blame culture" from the ignorant.

I get the feeling it’s another transitionary year. Get the core of a young hungry team this year, we might get lucky and sneak into playoffs but we go into next summers window from a much stronger base and avoid this years problems of having to do a major rebuild.

Absolutely.
We only have to reflect back on last season - by 6th November we were in 14th place - a point above 17th place Preston. We had won 6 out of 17 games!
It was Monday 8th November when Chris Wilder walked into the mess he was left with.

Yet we finished 7th, beat Man Utd away in the Cup, beat Spurs at home and were 7 unbeaten at home - for the first time in many seasons. Wilder created an effective unit out of someone else`s spare parts. Our defects were obvious, but it was 100% above and beyond what we were watching under the previous regime.
Lets see what happens. Its a long season.(y)

Ask Forest, they seemed to do a good job of things after a rubbish start last season. But that won't let you beat up on Boro will it so just carry on with the sky's falling in narrative and all the chicken lickens will come home to roost

And Sheffield United - just 19 points from 17 games on 6th November.
Yet they ended up alongside Forest .....

I honestly wonder whether for some fans this is their first experience of a transfer window. They always go this way for clubs like us where we aren’t one of the big clubs who can just take whoever they want.

Cracks me up as well that people make up all this drama at the club about Wilder sending a message to the higher ups with his selections 😂

Should have got all our business done before a ball was kicked - Wilder has been let down. Same old Boro I’m afraid, disorganised and unprofessional. Best manager we’ve had in years and we’ve failed to give him proper backing

There is a big difference between missing 1 player and half a starting 11. In Wilder's own words last night we are 5 players short of our starting 11. I'm not blaming Wilder, it's the recruitment team that have failed.

It's alright saying look where Forest, Sheff Utd, Boro were at whatever point. Look where the teams that finished top 2 were at any point in the season. They both started well and stayed up there for the season. Also, the 3 teams mentioned all had to change manager to achieve that. I'm sure Wilder isn't planning on us being **** enough he gets sacked so someone else can come and turn it around.

For a successful promotion season you want to be in and around the top 2 for most of the season. Otherwise it's the playoff lottery. I'm sure Wilder was expecting better and was given certain promises when he took over. I can guarantee he won't be happy with giving teams 10+ points head starts before he gets a squad he's happy with. Will he stick around for another season if the club can't be trusted to recruit effectively? If not, we're back here next season trying to recruit for a different manager's style.

We don't know that. It depends what brief the recruiters have been given. If the brief is to find players who can emulate Messi or Lewandowski or Juninho, then it's no wonder that they are struggling.

Wilder seems stiff, inflexible and intransigent. Maybe he needs to mould a team from the squad of players that is available to him and Boro, instead of looking for a perfect match to his ideal all the time. That approach works for Man City and Liverpool, but I'm not sure it works when you are a run of the mill Championship side in an unfashionable part of the country.

I'm ready to be a convert to Wilder's philosophy, but it seems to me he's headed down the Warnock/Pulis route of old fashioned managers trying to build a team capable of winning something in 1992.

The players we have aren't good enough to get promoted playing any style of football. Some of them are but we are still short up front and in midfield whatever formation you choose. We had 3 loan strikers last year that have left and 2 midfielders that have been sold that haven't all been replaced. It's not just about getting specific players. It's about getting quality players full stop. Wilder proved last season he can mould a team from the available squad but it wasn't good enough because we were lacking in quality (particularly up front). Some of those areas have been addressed (GK, LWB) but some of them are still lacking (ST) and some have gone backwards (CM).

I'd agree the LCB would be a specific player that would suit Wilder's style but would be a bonus to have. We can get away with not improving that position but that's the only one that is specialist. Good strikers and good midfielders are bread and butter for most management styles.

The fact is that the squad has got thinner rather than thicker so far and that doesn't indicate good planning. I also wonder why no one has commented on the clubs web site. It is a ramshackle mess at present with good bits bolted to rubbish bits and the promised new app is nowhere to be seen. None of this indicates good management and planning.
No wonder Mr Wilder looks increasingly depressed.

There`s a component here which is often overlooked:
Selling clubs.

They wont just bend to our wants and desires.
Its in their interests to have a bidding war and get the highest price.
Some will hang on until the final day.
Others will be greedy and price their man out of the market.
Agents will muddy waters and tout players to other clubs.
There are obstacles placed in our way and deliberate forestalling on deals.
We had to wait months to tie up the Spence deal, because Spurs were prepared to squeeze us for their advantage.
We couldnt place bids until that money came in.
Its not all about the recruitment team or Chris Wilder - its a money market, an auction - and players are live meat.
In the past we`ve offered silly money to entice players, now we have a different mindset.
Its a waiting game.
I agree with Chris Wilder - the window should have closed before the season started, but it didnt and we manage until then, with what we`ve got.
