Harry Maguire

I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for Maguire lately too.

Most of the time he's been absolutely immense for England when it matters. He's a big tournament player which says a lot about his mentality.

Brilliant at Leicester - but in my opinion he needs to get himself out of Man Utd. He's got a lot to offer a big club still.

Jordan Pickford is probably one or two bad performances away from the same sort of abuse.

Agree, I think his pass distribution was excellent especially to the wings. When I look back at the likes of Rio and John Terry, I honestly don't believe they were any better than McGuire. Agin, I just think our media loves to make one guy a pariah just so the have something negative to write or talk about.
I've read it all on here now I think. Genuinely staggering comment to make.

I don't get the abuse/critics Pickford gets. He's by a clear distance our best Goalkeeper. Yes we've been blessed with some great keepers in the past, but currently, we don't have any great GK's. Pope and Ramsdale are pretty average tbh - they're both PL quality, but not International quality. Same can be said with Henderson and Johnstone.

At least Ramsdale is confident playing the game of football. Pope is an anachronism.

It's not his fault we have a manager in charge who doesn't know we have a great deal better CB's available.
The problem is, we don't. We have poor CB choices. Mings and Coady are not better than an on form Maguire. Maguire has been excellent for England had one bad game before this week. The problem Southgate has now is that Maguire's form and confidence is shattered by his Man Utd experience and I doubt it will return before the world cup.

We do have better CB's though.

And I'm not talking about Mings or Coady.

There's an English CB playing at Arsenal (albeit he's playing at RB at the moment, but he's played CB for them for a year and is currently part of a very good team).
There's an English CB over in Italy, contributing massively to the fact his team just won the Scudetto for the first time in 10 years or so.

We have options. And we have better CB's currently than Harry Maguire. But for some reason, GS is staying loyal (far too loyal!) to Maguire...and it's actually affecting us negatively.

Maguire is a very good footballer, a very good centre back and he's definitely worthy of being in the England squad. Maybe not the starting XI - and i personally would have liked to see Tomori play against the Italians especially - but if GS is picking 4/5 centre backs, Maguire is 100% worthy of being involved and then its what happens on the training pitch and around the hotel, changing rooms etc that will decide if he gets a game. If he doesnt kick a ball for Man U between now and the WC, he's still in the squad because GS trusts him and knows him but also, is it a reflection that Man U have 2 better defenders than Maguire available to their manager and England do not, so why not pick him? If Kane all of a sudden got dropped because he fell out with Conte, or because Spurs signed Benzema and Haaland we'd all be okay with him starting for England in the WC over Toney or Rashford wouldn't we.

Don't think comparing Kane being dropped and still going to the WC should be in the same conversation of Maguire being dropped.

One of these players is in the top 3 #9's in the world. The other can't get a game ahead of someone who is 5ft 9.

Would second the endorsements of White and add that he's an excellent passer of the ball, which avoids the constant need to get Pickford to furiously biff it back to the opposition.

If he's playing RB then he's unlikely to be a good CB where he made mistakes last season.

Tomori, done well in Italy, but the league isn't what it was in the 80s, it's a shadow of that. I'm interested to see where his journey goes though, and he's pretty close to getting in the side. 12 months ago Maguire was rightly ahead, and up until this week he'd only had one poor game for england so deserved to keep his place. Now though may be the time after a very poor game vs Germany from Maguire, to replace.

The 5ft9 defender is arguably the best defender in the league on current form.

It's exactly comparable, its about someone not playing for their club but being picked for their country, if Kane was dropped by Spurs he would still be the best English centre forward. Maguire has been dropped by Man U but he is still one of the best centre backs England have.

He needs to get himself out of that toxic club, Yanighted.

The medias portrayal as well as the comments on social media are nothing short of atrocious. The venom in some comments from "supporters"... you'd think he was a serial rapist.

Once he settles into a good PL team, he'll return to his best, but like every human being he is just going through a bad spell. I'd take him to Qatar no problem, as there is always the requirement for an attacking threat in those final moments of a tight game.

He’s also England’s second best penalty taker based on previous efforts 🤷🏻‍♂️
