Anyone on here been done for it?
Its not unique........ I suspect some of you have.

3 years in a young offenders institute.... for destroying many lives. Should get 10 at least. As a copper mate said to me.... it's no different from killing someone with an offensive weapon

Only ever done it once. I thought that my brother was going to die and I was at the other end of the country at the time and had to get to the hospital and I'd already had a few pints when I got that call. Drove overnight. Didn't kill anyone, thank flip.

I have never actively drank then got behind the wheel but I think I will have driven the next day still over the limit at some point when I was younger.

Never on the day/night of having a beer or 2, but morning after i have drove once when i had about 6 hours sleep and its probably still been in my system but ive had a shower, breakfast etc and felt ok but only did it as i had to get home (Only a few mile) because of a bereavement.

Our ex was in the house with her mate about 6,7 year ago and they were leathered and the mate was saying she was gonna drive home (About a quarter of a mile away) i said no chance, hid the keys and said if you even get in that car ill ring the police. She kicked up a fuss like you wouldn't believe. I drove the car back for her next morning, didn't get a thanks and never saw eye to eye again.

As appalling as it is I can't agree that its the same as murder, it plainly isn't and your friend surely must see that, given his profession.

Thought it was a bloke!!

Horrific for the family and not wanting to get into the whole root cause of her death. But not wearing a seat belt!!

Probably over the limit morning after once or twice in the past. Never knowingly done it otherwise. My daughter was near killed (Grandson was killed) by a drunk, unlicensed, un-insured driver in a vehicle that wasn't his. She was passenger in a Corsa. His car hit her, without braking, at close to 50mph. She suffered life changing injuries.

Thats horrendous. Sorry to hear that

A few times in my youth-1 major incident when I drove my mates new flash car (with his agreement) home from a beer festival, only to plough through somebody’s garden wall-got 18 month ban and a fine
Never done it since

Been banned for drink driving the morning after. I was pulled over on my way to work (about 9.30am) after a works night out the night before.

I stupidly answered my phone while sat at a red light and unmarked police car behind me pulled me over for that and then smelled the alcohol. Marginally failed the breathalyser. 0.42 (Limit=0.35)

I'm obviously very careful now. I dare say most people have drove over the limit, the day after a night out. I did a 3 day rehabilitation course to reduce my ban and was given the info to help calculate recovery times.

But basically if you start drinking at 7pm and have 6 pints of decent (5%) beer, you are on the limit at 7am and not totally at zero until around mid-day. If you have 8 pints, you could be over the limit till 1pm. and not totally at zero till 6pm!!

The above are for males, recovery times are even longer for females and obviously recovery times do vary from person to person but these are provided as a guide as a worst case scenario.

When people go to weddings and have 6+ pints plus wine plus maybe a couple of shorts in the late evening, it is likely they are over the limit all the next day. How many people have been to a wedding, stayed over and had brekfast, felt ok to drive and jumped in the car around 10am? If police parked up near some of these wedding venues on a Sunday morning and breathalysed everyone, I dare say majority would fail.

I've never 'actively' done it. I mean as in drinking and jumping in a car. Yet no doubt I've been over the limit after a night out. Especially when younger.

A drunk driver smashed into my parents car a few years ago. He was 3 times over the limit driving from Carlisle to Newcastle. So not even 'around the corner'. They were both hospitalised and car burst into flames. So thank god they both managed to get out. I think he received 18 months as two other cars crashed into them coming over the hill.

That said can't preach as my nephew tested positive last year. He was banned for 2 years as only been driving 3 months. Increased drama as his dad is a police Sargent 😕

Good point. Info relating to the metabolisation of alcohol should be much more widely available, even with numerous caveats. Also, cheap and accurate reusable breathalysers would help those concerned after a few beers the night before. I’m sure I’ve been over the limit a few times driving the morning after.

I don't think these calculations are correct. I was speaking to a cousin who is a policeman a few weeks back and he said you can drink 5 pints over a 5 hour period and pass a breathalyser test afterwards. I was surprised by those numbers but some googling backed it up. If you are failing in the morning you've had 20 units. It takes about an hour to metabolise 1 unit and there's about 2 units in a pint of standard strength beer so your 1st pint is gone by the time you are starting your 3rd, 2.5 gone by the time you finish your 5th which is about 2.5 units of alcohol left in your system which is about the limit. People forget how time affects things. Most people drink quicker than that and if you have 2 pints in an hour you can have more in your system than someone drinking slowly over 5 hours so that is where the confusion comes from.

Personally I will never have more than 2 even if I'm out all night and I'm quite happy to drink non-alcoholic beer or soft drinks. I have definitely had mornings after where I had been drinking heavily into the middle of the night where I was probably worse so it's impossible to say whether I've ever been over the limit the next morning. My guess would be I probably have but I try to give myself plenty of time before driving on a morning when I can. I'm too sensible to drink that heavily these days though.

Those seem to be the accepted rates, but one of my friends completed his PhD thesis on this topic (he drank profusely!) and contended that if you continue to drink, this does affect the speed at which the liver deals with the alcohol. And not in a good way.

In a previous job all of our field sales reps were given the DIY breathalysers as they were travelling during the week and often stayed at hotels with bars or ones with pubs next door and were clearly at risk of being over the next morning.

When we had a sales meeting, we normally had a night out the previous evening and the MD had a couple of us internal (non-driving) sales staff actually take breath tests the next morning to show the field sales guys the risks. I think I was over the limit until 10.00am and my female colleague was still over at 12pm. Was quite an eye opener for all of us.

Some friends of ours were driving home from Newcastle on Saturday evening and were hit by a car on the Tees flyover. Their car was written off, they were sure they were going over the edge and the car they hit them went over onto its side; the road was closed for two hours. They were all lucky in that no one was injured. It transpires that the woman that hit them was over the limit. Well over the limit.

I’m sure we all have stories like this….
