The British police are the best in the world

Tough job being a copper. Met a few on duty that have been total and utter *******. Saying that, I’ve played football with a few coppers and know a few others through my social circle and they are good people. Leads me to think, like any job or working environment, there’s good eggs and bad eggs.

Thankless job. Unfortunately the minority soil it for the majority like in most walks of life.
There is good mad bad in every profession. The lack of vetting is worrying, thought it was quite strict to get into any of the forces.
Many people who criticise , who do you call when the clart hits the fan ? Genuine cpppers hate the wrong uns , but they do THEIR jobs right .Went wrong when we went totally for "degree" Police , not the savvy streetwise type

That was always the question I would pose to my students when they would be calling the police ‘pigs’, etc.

The selection process is a farce from past experience.

It’s all about hitting certain quotas and box ticking now instead of how suited the person would be for the role.

I applied for a national force in my 20’s. Went to the police college in Coventry for the assessment the first time and was told by the assessor on the quiet I had wasted my time as they had filled their quota for white males…. Sure enough my score was high enough to join but no position was available.

I was invited to apply again 6 months later and got through again. Went through all the vetting process and was waiting for a medical and eventual joining date. They even told me which site I was going to… but then all of a sudden the position wasn’t available again.

I knew two others at the site and they told me my position was given to a female as they had no women on site at that time. She then left after 8 months as she couldn’t carry the kit for 12 hr shifts (armed)

They asked me to apply again in 2009… I told them to do one

Appaently there were no clues that the serial rapist cop known to all his colleagues as 'B@stard Dave' might have been a wrong 'un.

Or similarly, Wayne Couzens who used his Police warrant card to abduct and murder Sarah Everard was known by his colleagues as "The rapist", but who could have known eh ? Then his colleagues set up a hilarious old Whatapp group to share jolly japes about ‘fingering domestic violence victims’, tasering children, and beating and sexually assaulting women - top bantz, eh?

Just a few bad apples, hmmmm

Dont forget about the taking snapchats and passing them around their mates of the two sisters that were murder victims.

Best not to generalise on this.
Some coppers protect the wrong uns (see the reports into the Met)
Some coppers are good, some are bad - but when you read about 800 being investigated in one force for abuse (sexual and other) it ought to make us all sick.

Further - when they choose not to punish them appropriately (minor warnings) for what, in other professions, would be automatic dismissal we ought to be firkin outraged.

I don’t care whether they are the best or the worst - we need to be better

The problem with any police force is it is likely to attract the wrong people for the wrong reasons. Sure, it attracts the right people for the right reasons too. However, if you want to commit crime with impunity, the police force would be an ideal job.

On the subject of which is the best police force in the world? I don't know, but I imagine all police forces suffer from the issue mentioned in the opening line of my post. You can be the best in the world and still need considerable improvement.

I would imagine cases that involve sexual assault are rare and that's why they get the airtime they get. I would, also, imagine there is a fair bit of low level crime in the police force too that doesn't get reported as often.

There is probably a lot of great stuff the police do that goes unreported, just bobbies doing their job.

And that really is at the heart of the problem. I know its not the point you were trying to make but the police is the only real option you have and for that reason you should be able to have confidence in them.

In terms of the OP the answer is a firm yes, if the question refers to investigation of serious or complex crime, which is the usual context applied to that question.

The expertise and methodology applied here is second to none.

In broader terms it seems that UK policing is in crisis in many ways. Leadership in policing has been distinctly lacking for sometime and we're seeing the consequences of that now, but I also think that it's de rigueur to criticise the police too; many issues are societal and policing only deals with the symptoms, rather than the causes, which is governments responsibility.

It all adds up to policing being a bit of a thankless task currently.

If policing is carried out "by consent"- how can we withdraw consent and what would replace it?

Speaking from experience the british police have major cultural issues that are endemic. There is corruption right through the ranks and there is no way of reporting such matters without putting yourself at risk. The good ones are hounded out whilst the rot spreads through the rest of the apples. Its not necessarily that they are all rotten but in the interest of self preservation you are better keeping quiet or moving on.

The industry is full of virtue signallers who really couldn't care less and are happy to turn blind eyes to all sorts of wrong doing. These people just know the language to use. All talk, no substance.
Which experience are you speaking from?
