Steffen

Yes he is better than bettinelli and lumley but following another poor performance today can we put this one to bed and that we should be looking for something cheaper (and better) next season as he is nowhere near worth the money and wages he would inevitably cost.

We’ve got a keeper who’s done very little wrong on the bench. I can only imagine Steffen has it in his loan contract that if he’s fit, he plays. If he doesn’t, I don’t get why we’re playing a very shaky keeper to City’s benefit over our own.

Roberts has played 5 games, he was at fault for goals in 2 of them.
He played against Sunderland U21s last week and was apparently atrocious, conceding 5.

Steffen has played 25 games, he's probably been at fault for 3 goals in that time.

Most of the issues people have with Steffen are nearly moments where we've not actually conceded.

I'd not be paying big money to sign him permanently, but Steffen has been largely fine since we signed him.

The issue with Steffen seems predominantly the fact he sometimes gives the ball away when playing out from the back, but if you listen to Carricks interview after the Millwall game on Tees, he says that this way of playing is a hundred percent how he has instructed them to play and accepts and takes responsibility for the fact we’ll lose the ball doing that occasionally.

you have to wonder why he was loaned to us? I mean was it to build up his confidence or was it just get him away from the Citeh players?

I don’t think he’s a bad keeper but he clearly has issues on focusing and managing his penalty area. There’s little or no way he’ll ever be a Premier league again unless he improves on his obvious weaknesses.

Rubbish.
He does not make big saves, often doesn't make routine saves.
He doesn't dominate his box.
But mainly he causes us danger when there is no need whatsoever with his fannying around.

He’ll never pay for city as you say.

there’s a reason he’s here. That’s not being negative it’s just a fact.

He wanted to play games to secure a place in the USA's World Cup squad, it's well documented.

Why make up b***ks reasoning?

That's very kind of Carrick to say that, but I think we all know that playing it out from the back is different to a precision pass to one of their attackers.

I don't think Steffen is a bad keeper, just has those inconsistencies which worry fans, whereas Randolph, another 'PL back-up,' was a dependable goalkeeper who did better at this level.

Randolph is the best keeper we've had since Schwarzer, but Randolph also never had to play it out from the back with us.

A big part of the reason that people have issues with Steffen is because of a deliberate tactics from our managers.

Steffen 100% ****ed up today with that pass, but he's being told to play like that.

It's his own personal decision making that is the problem. Today he tried to thread a pass through two Sunderland players to a man on the edge of the 18 yard box facing his own goal, when a simple ball to the left back position was on.

He does not make big saves. I don'r remember a single great save.
He lets soft goals in and so often beaten at his near post (like today)
He claims very little in the air, flaps a lot at crosses.
It is one thing being told to play short passes with his defenders, its another playing ludicrous balls like he did yet again today.

I've got as much chance of playing in the PL with City from now on.

He is a real weakness.

I don’t think the players know when to trust him to come for the ball. Twice during the game he called for ball but the players dealt with it themselves. Personally he should’ve been out for the ball when Fry got sent off.

The bad pass is unfortunate but just a risk with playing from the back, that’s not a problem as it will create far more goals than it costs us long term

Staying on his line for the first goal was terrible goalkeeping and ultimately cost us the game, getting beat at his near post for the second was almost as bad. Those are the things you can’t really excuse a keeper for. For the fee plus likely huge wages we can do far better in the summer

Steffen is awful and one of the issues is that he doesn’t make big saves that are important to us. The other top teams all have good keepers. I watched Roberts in the reserve game against Sunderland and his performance was shambolic. I couldn’t believe how bad he was. We need a new keeper.

I think he did under Monk and looked a bit ropey as a result.

Knee jerk post. He's been a big part of the upturn under Carrick, and deserves to be backed. He made mistakes today including not closing down and helping out Fry leading to the penalty, but he's won us more points than he's lost, and will continue to do so.
