Steffen

Knee jerk post. He's been a big part of the upturn under Carrick, and deserves to be backed. He made mistakes today including not closing down and helping out Fry leading to the penalty, but he's won us more points than he's lost, and will continue to do so.
That’s very true but do his performances justify paying likely huge wages and probably 5 million to sign him in the summer?
I think better keepers will be available for significantly cheaper this summer

Not to blame for either goal. But predictably those who insist that he is poor are blaming him for our loss. One misplaced pass...
I'm not sure you can put it down to one misplaced pass. When he plays like this he makes the crowd and the defence nervous, and the ball leading up to the penalty was about 70/30 in his favour if he had come out for it.

I don't think they do, and I don't think we'll be trying to sign him permanently.

But there's a difference between questioning signing him permanently and blaming him for every goal we concede.

I think Sol Brynn should be in the frame next season, he's had two consecutive seasons with rave reviews and he's a local lad.

The fact that there’s even a sniff of a fans argument for perhaps offering him a contract in the summer tells you all you need to know about what the fans think of him.

Today was a big game and some players are made for big games, I’d argue that certain players like your captain, main striker and your goalie have to be made for big games. Unfortunately all three went missing.

Steffen did really well for me, made some crucial saves and even saved a penalty that shouldn’t have been given.

Down to 10 men and ultimately beaten by a single goal.

Why does it tell you that?

He's a player on a long term contract at the most successful club in England for the last decade.

The value of signing him permanently is weighed down by the fact that they'll probably demand a decent fee for him.

If we signed him in the summer, it would be multi-millions, which is a big sum for us whatever the position.

Steffen will never play for city that’s just how I see it but I do like him but he comes with all his flaws as well the wreck less ness is steffen that in his dna.

He’s not going to change you either take it and accept the yin with the yang or you move on.

But he won’t change.

The bad pass is unfortunate but just a risk with playing from the back, that’s not a problem as it will create far more goals than it costs us long term

Staying on his line for the first goal was terrible goalkeeping and ultimately cost us the game, getting beat at his near post for the second was almost as bad. Those are the things you can’t really excuse a keeper for. For the fee plus likely huge wages we can do far better in the summer

I thought the same with the first goal watching it live, but then seeing the replay from his perspective he moves off his line as soon as Stewart takes the heavy touch. He has to stay on his line before that or he leaves himself exposed to an early shot.
Second goal he will only see very late through a crowd of players, Hackney has got to block the shot from the Sunderland player.

Roberts looked okay when we played Sunderland and they barely troubled him, but in his other games during that run, he looked pretty bang average to be fair. Remember him being particularly poor when Cardiff smashed 3 past him.

That save for the penalty is bizarre. The commentary said it came back off the post but watching highlights it looks like steffen scoops it back into the centre of the goal. It would have been easier to knock it wide and out of the danger area.

My problem with Steffen is he doesn't take into consideration circumstances of the game in his decision making. if your away from home in a derby and under the cosh then you play it safe and long if in doubt.Don't forget he was awful against Brighton playing it out and putting teammates into trouble. He just seems oblivious at times to danger theres no instinct or game management in his head. I don't think he's particularly improved as the season has gone on either. So If we bought him he would be one hugely overpriced keeper who's only championship standard.

As of right now, no, but he's still relatively young for a keeper and has a lot of upside. There's still the rest of this season for him to kick on, and should we reach the pl it would be justified to cough up the quoted figures.

He is a solid keeper and has won us points on occasions but I expected far more from him, I expect he will be our highest paid player as well and he isn’t justifying that for me

I think long term Brynn will be our keeper but it’s a huge step up for a young keeper next year. I think he might have a year in league one

I would have thought his starting position should have been slightly further forward so when the heavy touch came he would have been able to get to the ball when it’s basically a 1 on 1.

The second is just as much hackneys fault looking at the reply
