Social energy tariffs

Gaining a lot of traction this idea.

Some households will get their energy at a lower tariff with the costs being paid for either through general taxation or through even higher tariffs for those that don't qualify for the social tariff.

I support the idea of people in need getting energy more cheaply, but worry about how it's funded.

If general taxation then it's something I feel could work.

If it's higher tariffs for everyone else, this will just further fuel division and resentment.

What do you think?

So those out of work (for whatever reason) but for example because they can't be arsed to get a job will pay less for gas and electric than me and my wife who both work?

(Disclaimer, before anyone jumps in with this that and the other we all know there are people out there like that who've never had a job and have no intention of getting one)

You and your wife could always jack your jobs in like.

See how you get on living the benefits lifestyle dream, must be great if people are doing it out of choice? 😉

I think the answer to this, and all other forms of benefits, is universal basic income. Everyone gets the minimum required to be comfortable, even the super rich. Nobody can complain then that someone else is getting something that they aren't. Everyone gets a level of income that allows more than just surviving and anyone is free to go and work and earn above that amount. UBI would be tax free but anything you go and earn above that would be taxed progressively more than it is now, particularly focusing on taxing wealth and not just income so it still incentivises working.

I won’t qualify but cannot afford my Tariffs to be any higher. What do I do as a single income divorced bloke who qualifies for zero support for anything?

I am literally worth more dead than I am living. I cannot continue to be squeezed.

Happy to see this for the elderly or disabled... but it needs to be funded from the suppliers, the more it hits them in the pocket the better.

this should not apply to the likes of my cousin who has 7 kids and has not worked a day in his life

See, knew one of those comments was incoming. You are blind if you don't believe there are people out there comfortably living within their means off of state benefits.

Plus why would I jack my job in? I love my job, the sense of going to work and supporting my family. I've even said to the missus if we ever won the lottery I'd never jack in work, I'd open my own place.

As Acklam Lad said, I've no issue with supporting utility bills for those who cannot work because of medical issues or the elderly. I do have an issue with supporting those who choose not to work when I'm pulling my puddings out every day.

I too am a fan of a universal basic income model. It could do wonders for this country and it's people. It's how we fund it though I'm not clear on.
Going back to the pandemic days when their were rumors of a £500 payment for every citizen in the country to get money moving around the economy again I was well in favour of that and I still am. That would be a great experiment to try and see the results. It doesn't matter if Jeff over the road spends it on fags and booze or Linda down the street buys a beach towel and a holiday. Money will be moving which can only be a good thing?

I'd say better from the energy generators. They are the ones making record profits.

Believe it or not, most energy providers (who do not also generate energy) are still operating at a loss.
Most energy providers are subsidiaries of the generators and so are being protected from operating at a loss in one part of a business while making massive profits in the other. It's just an accounting trick. It's bull**** they've allowed that to become the narrative and get away with it.

Nationalise the electricity generation and suppliers - that way we manage power not for profit, but for the needs of our people. The only way investment can be managed and prices controlled is by public ownership. Now, profit for private shareholders and foreign Governments comes above the needs of all of us.

I don't know of a single person who that applies to. I doubt you do.

Why are you angry with my comment?

There are 24 energy suppliers still active in the UK. Most of them aren't subsidiaries of the energy generators.

They are just middlemen that aren't needed. They are just adding costs to a system that aren't needed. The system is there to protect the energy generators from losing money by dealing with customers. The whole setup is to protect them. They get massive subsidies to generate energy and then we let them charge the highest price to sell it to us instead of the cheapest. It's a massive con.
