Car manufacturing in the UK

Some Mercedes models manufacturing in Alabama.
Thank goodness the AMG engines still made in Germany.

It's at the lowest level of output in my lifetime. I'm a pensioner.

The dip since 2016 is quite staggering.
Well Patrick Minford was right when he said it would have too be run down if Brexit happened. He knew trade barriers would cripple the car industry just like many others. Yet he was still a Brexiteer despite being an economist. I suppose he must have really, really wanted a blue passport.

It’s on its way out… what’s the point in shipping heavy batteries from China to Europe when you can build the car around them and ship all in one?

Our BMW was built in China… my new car was built there too.

Funny thing is the build quality is actually better than my last BMW that was built in Germany

That’s the way it will develop. Wherever the batteries are manufactured. That’s where the cars will be built.
Europe reckons it will have 40 plus battery plants by 2030.

Germany has lost nearly half of its production in ten years, declining car manufacture in Western Europe is not unique to the UK.

Many car companies have their HQ in Germany too - Mercedes, BMW/Mini, VW group (VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT) etc.

Taken from the report on BBC, clearly another Brexit lie and people still support and defend the harm and limitations Brexit has caused, the UK government can no longer hide behind the big bad EU for our own inadequacies.

BBC report

Manufacturers hope the car industry will start to accelerate again, but say getting to pre-pandemic levels would require major investment and new car makers to come to the UK.

They warn that the UK is lagging behind, particularly on offering state aid to manufacturers.
In the US, the government is planning to offer billions in subsidies to car makers who create electric vehicle supply chains in America.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of industry body the SMMT, warns this will "hoover up" a lot of international investment, hitting the UK industry further.
The European Union is considering retaliating by either relaxing state aid rules or by extending Covid recovery or green technology-boosting programmes.
One of the benefits of Brexit was meant to be escaping from the straitjacket of EU state aid rules which limited the amount of support. governments could give to favoured industries.
Mr Hawes conceded the UK could be in the unenviable position of offering less support to crucial industries than before it left the EU.

Not having enough working battery plants is an issue and concern for all European countries with vehicle manufacturing.

China is the biggest source of Rare Earth minerals by a big margin and I am told they are needed for the Vehicle Power batteries

Honda closed their only European plant in Swindon to consolidate production of their electric vehicles in Asia. It is disaapointing and does reduce our GDP.

I used to work in electronics in the 1980s and I would say over 80% of our electrionics industry has gone since then.

I do hope those people who continue to support brexit don't have freinds in the automotive industry. Imagine being frineds with someone threatening your job?

Ukraine is rich in Rare Earth minerals I read, hence the Russian invasion. Johnson's visiting may well be all about his future personal wealth.

To be honest, there is a huge transition going on right now from petrol to electric development. Bentley are hiring because of the switch. While we may see output reduce because of this development stage it is noticeable that it is not unique to the UK market and there are no great layoffs in the industry.
However, I do understand there is a great hunger for brexit bad news.
