RIP the Duke of Edinburgh

I love this uber-deference, it's the one thing our nation is still truly great at. I respect his service and a family have lost their head, which is always terribly sad, no matter the grand old age of the deceased.

But my heart is more with the passing and every wasted life of ex-soldiers who died in shop doorways, having served the crown and been rewarded with lifelong mental health problems, with little help from either country or regiment.

It's with the poor and voiceless who subsist on old age pensions, and the disabled who found themselves targeted as state scroungers while the royal family live in unimaginable riches.

I'm not even a republican - not really - but the mawkishness and false public grief of these occasions is just too much for me.

And I'm sorry but if the man had come on this board spouting any of the many racist comments for which he was infamous, he'd have been banned in 5 minutes flat.

Bring on the brickbats. Too soon for some, I know.

Often have Classic FM on in the car, today on the way to Darlington there were 3 news bulletins about the event (and nothing else) and the music in between was Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, all the verses of Abide with Me and Purcell's When I am Laid in Earth . Talk about mawkish over the top.

Is there such a word as "Mawk"? If there is then it was Mawk.

Feel for his family having lost family members myself in recent years. Apart from that it doesn't really mean much to me. Not a royalist, he was 99 years old, and as someone else said he had an history of shall we say putting his foot in it in the past. Like I said though sorry for his family.

BBC seem to have to have gone a OTT. According to i-player listings BBC 1 is showing nothing else until 04:00 in the morning.

All radio stations similar, BBC 1 & 2, ITV now nothing but Prince Phillip for today and probably rest of weekend. Condolences to his family but does everyone's life have to stop for the death of a 99 year old man, royalty or not?

I haven't had it on all day (which I usually would), so turned it on and noticed they must be doing half-hourly news bulletins and yep everything is very sombre. I've not got much chance of hearing concerning hobbits from the Lord of the Rings today!

Feels like we are being told what to think, imagine how bad it'll be when the queen pops it, they'll probably turn the internet off for a fortnight (Actually that might be great)

Not everyone watches the news at the same time, and it's fairly major news.

Though it's surprising if it goes beyond today for cancelling programming.

Not sure if all these are true and not read all of them yet. But if only half were true he should have been kept in check a lot earlier than he was.
