FAO Double edged shaving enthusiasts

I remember the original thread about this on the old board and found it all very interesting.

Did some reading up on it, then when the other half was asking me about Christmas presents I said I'd quite like to "get into that double entry shaving", which sounded weird and made her think I was interested in a particular brand of niche porn.

It was the original thread that got me into it, and I’ve converted a few into the double entry edge along the way. The thing is it’s so cheap to have a go. Can’t tell you how much I was shïttïng it the first time I took a blade to my face though 😁

I was also converted by the original thread. I was sick of getting ingrowing hairs and also the ever increasing cost of the Gillette triple/quadruple bladed things that got blunt as soon as you used them.
The traditional method turns shaving from a chore to an experience and I definitely wouldn't switch back.

Someone on the original thread pointed out how we were being conned by the Gillette marketing for three/four/five, ever better shavers and I’d just paid a packet for some. Then bought 100 single blades for 8p each, probably two years worth for eight quid. And despite my original thread I’ve had far fewer cuts.
When I think of it I haven’t had an in growing hair since either, didn’t realise that was a link.

Totally forgot about wet shaving, the pandemic has meant I've not been "out out" in the UK since December 19.

I think mines a Merkur 34C, with Taylors Old Bond cream/ foam or whatever, and proraso after shave balm.

Need to get a decent shaving brush if anyone has any recommendations.

Same here, I bought like a 100 pack of DE blades, must have been about 3 years ago, and there's probably only about 10% used up. I think they will last me until I die :ROFLMAO: I only wet shave neck/ under chin mind, as I look like a baby if fully clean-shaven.

I remember getting more knicks and cut dimples first off, thought it was because I was using an open blade but turns out it just took a little time for my skin to get used to it. I just stick with the DE now though mostly, far quicker and a lot less chance of a catastrophic problem, but pretty much the same feel, and almost as much satisfaction.

Someone needs to tell the forces about DE razors, in my time every lad was on the mach 3's and you pretty much get forced into wet shaving every day at first, used to cost a fortune.

Unfortunately, some of the suppliers have proven to be shockingly cruel to badgers so its a good idea to check where they came from.
Well groomed wizard, synthetic badger hair. Doesn’t shed and works well, Amazon is your friend here £12.95

Just as a postscript... Just have had 4th shave from same blade. Still as sharp as büggery. Had a few little nicks here and there, but nonetheless a really good close shave. For me they are up there with Feathers, but as you may know YMMV. 😏
Will be trying a Med Prep from tomorrow.
Just ordered some Gillette blue to try, apparently I need to show my passport to take delivery 🙄

Imagine it will have been my thread and my post about Gillette as it winds me up blokes get conned into the whole shaving racket by ads, magazines and marketing

only reason those razors exists is because patents expired. The fact they also still make DE blades is the best bit!

On the strength of this thread I bought an Alum block and some Taylor’s of Old Bond Street shaving soap, used both for the first time this morning.

When i lathered up I thought it was going to be too thick, but it’s brilliant. Think it was cedar wood? (Why is every fragrance designed for men based on wood? Do they think we all want to smell like sheds!)

Didnt know what an Alum block was until it was mentioned above so had to google it.

Somehow between the two I feel like I’ve had my best shave ever, seems like a closer shave too, though can’t see that could be the case. Good result though 👍
Guessing sandlewood. If it’s the creams, some perform better then others and they do almond (cherry bake well esque), coconut etc

sandlewood is a staple in men’s fragrance hence popular

Worth noting that the Taylor’s soaps are vegan tallow free, they do creams which lather better for beginners but don’t last that long - if you don’t need a vegan soap then a tallow based soap will usually perform better but it’s down to preference really, if it’s working for you that’s the important thing
