England bit of perspective

Weve got 4 points not many teams are smashing it with 2 wins.
If we drew with Croatia and beat the jocks I'm sure we would be happy. We played a team who would have died just to beat us. Was always gonna be a tough game. Fair play to them they stopped us playing.

You can put all your formations and teams up with all your attacking midfielders in but if southgate played that we would have been beaten by a well organised Scottish team. Theres no mugs in this tournament barring north Macedonia.

I think we are well setup to play against the big teams and do well. C'mon 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Completely agree with you, the bed wetting on here after the Scotland game was cringeworthy. I don't know why I should be surprised though, it's always the same, the 'usual suspects' never fail to deliver....

at least people are calming down and getting a bit of perspective. Very few teams win every group game and go on and win. We have a hurdle get out of the group, we might already have done that. On to the next hurdle.

Yep, like Neville said on ITV today, we set up with 2 holding midfielders, it didn't suit the Scotland game but we don't really have any other options. The formation will be more effective when we come up against more offensive sides. We have the pace to play on the break.
The Scotland game was a one off, draw a line through it 👍

I think it will all depend on how the group finishes in determining whether it was a better result for them than it was for us. If we lose to C.Republic and they beat Croatia, yes 4 points is probably still going to be enough to see us through but it will be embarrassing if the Scots finish above us in 2nd place, especially knowing that the draw they got at Wembley helped them along the way.

Equally, there's every chance we'll beat C.Republic and Scotland will lose to Croatia, meaning we'll top the group on 7 points and they'll finish bottom of the group on 1 point. Would the Scots then see drawing with us in a different light, or still somehow believe they got one over on us?

I did find their celebrations a bit over the top the other night to be honest. England were there for the taking and it was actually a great opportunity for them to beat us. I'd have felt a bit disappointed if I was a Scotland fan. I came away almost with a feeling of relief that we managed to draw the game, and spared the embarrassment of a home defeat.

Any big side, or even a side with a half decent striker would have beat England 2/3-0 yesterday. Thats more worrying than anything. Absolutely miles off all over the pitch

I would argue the other way. Foolish people were saying it's the best team for years and that we are in with a chance of winning the tournament before the competition began. I don't believe that to be the case we need to be reastic we don't have the best squad and for certain we don't have the best manager at the tournament so chances of winning it are slim.

Scotland was always going to be a tough game. They haven't played in a Finals for 23 years and then get drawn in the same group as England! They had the emotional edge.

It should be a wake up call for anyone thinking England were going to win. England will qualify but then knocked out in the Round of 16. There's little chance of a win against France, Germany or Portugal.

Or Hungary . . .

I agree there are better squads and teams than ours in the competition and we probably wont win the tournament but I'd say you could definitely make an argument that this is the best England squad in the last 15 years. With players like Mount Foden Sancho and Grealish included its surely a better squad than the one which was relatively successful in 2018 and we were horrendous for several tournaments before the 2018 World Cup, going back probably15 years.

Ultimately Friday's result was good for England and bad for Scotland.

England are essentially through.
Scotland need to win to have a chance. To do that, they'll have to score at least 1 goal, and they've managed 0 in their first 2 games.

Performance in the group stage is a really poor indicator of how a team will perform in the rest of the tournament, or even the next game. Germany's first 2 performances would be evidence of this, as would Poland's.

I think GS has done a good job so far in bringing a young squad together, yes we didn't play that well against Scotland but he has a team with real potential. Unlike all the arm chair managers, he has played and managed in tournament football including a world cup semi final.

He knows tournament football is about peeking at the right time and managing expectations on and off the pitch, I'm hoping GS manages and realises the potential of the squad at the right time.

Great post, Come On England! We were arguably at our worst Friday and Scotland had the performance of their lifetimes yet the game resulted in a draw. It sets you up for the tougher games later in the tournament if you have a test during the group stages. Saying that, England need to improve all round if we are to go anywhere in the tournament, but I think we will.

Let's be realistic Scotland are not likely to beat Croatia. We might have qualified already before we play the Czechs

This is a silly discussion, having a 'half decent striker' doesn't automatically mean someone would beat us, you have to get the ball to the striker, in the right areas, work midfielders so that they lose their man , and defend properly. Scotland defended properly but didn't stretch our midfield, get in behind us, pull our CBs out of position, get between the lines.

Your argument is that a better team would have beaten us or if scotland had better players, you can make that argument against any team. The reality is that our defence were largely comfortable and we could have played another 2 hours and it still probably would have been 0-0

agreed and the key players are far from peaking, I think the next world cup or the next EUROs are a better bet for a title.
