Terry Cooper played his final Boro game this day 1977

Sadly in a 3-0 defeat at Everton, he was replaced by Mr Middlesbrough John Hickton in the 2nd half

Big Jack made a master stroke when signing TC in March 1975 for £50k from Leeds, he refused to go on the Boro's 1978 preseason tour, was suspended & with a year to go on his contract asked to be put on the transfer list, he joined his old team mate Norman Hunter at Bristol City in the summer of 78, so after 123 appearences for the mighty Boro & one goal, which came in a 2-0 win at Liverpool in March 1976, he was gone

Remember his 1st Boro away game, which was at Chelsea he was sent off, we won that game 2-1 with goals from John Craggs, his 1st Boro top flight goal & Alan Willey his one & only Boro away goal & our last win at Stamford Bridge

Ironically, his final Boro league cup match was at home to Everton in a 2-1 defeat, which seen, IMHO, the best visiting goalkeeping I have ever seen when George Woods was invincible on the night

I thought he was still good enough to play for England while at the Boro

RIP Terry Didn’t he play in white boots when he first signed from Leeds? Great player and what a signing by Big Jack.

Or that's sad, one of the best Left backs, if not the best, we've had on our books, certainly in my time, still good enough to play for England when he played for us

£50k signing, master stroke from big Jack, can still see that theatrical dive at home to Newcastle when Spike scored an excellent free kick at the holgate end

RIP Terry Cooper x

Very sad news. Was my favourite player, when in 1970 World Cup team. An overlapping full back he was literally ahead of the game. His broken leg at Leeds was a disaster for club and country.
As said above when Boro signed him it was so exciting, we were buying a world and World Cup class player. With a world class moustache too. Terry didn't disappoint at Boro on the field but later clashed off it with Jack's successor as manager, John Neal.
I always remember the Gazette had him favourite to be manager of Boro after Colin Todd. In fact it was an outsider, Lennie Lawrence that got the job.
But TC was quoted in the Gazette as describing Middlesbrough in glowing terms. He loved it here, Midlesbrough was so friendly, a community town/club. He said we were like "a big village." I always remembered that. It was such a good compliment.
Very sad to hear of the death of a truly great player and someone that thrilled so many young Boro fans.
RIP Terry Cooper

I'm looking at the first picture in the thread. Is that when he was sent off at Chelsea shortly after he joined us in 1975? It looks like it. We won the game and later he had the sending-off rescinded. It was the last time we won at their place. Jack Charlton, Jim Headridge and Terry Cooper. All now gone 😞

I remember an interview after he signed saying he had come to Boro to further his career not to see out his playing days as many thought. Did he invent the role of wing back ? not sure but was the best in that role. My favourite player as a kid. On his first appearance I thought - So this is how a top player plays. Should have been a world cup winner in 1970 in Mexici

Yes, his 3rd Boro game, 1st away game, sent off

Such a shock, woukd have loved to have seen him at one of the former Boro player reunions I attended

In my time we've had good teams, some very good teams, with our fair share of excellent players but @Craggyjohn who on another thread to remember TC was spot on when he said, he was probably our 1st biggest signing & that's about right

Registered No504 when he made his debut at home to Spurs & taking over the No3 shirt from Frank Spraggon
