Variant of concern in South Africa

Errr ! i suffer from long covid , have done since December , extreme fatigue, insomnia, extreme pain in my joints, making it difficult to walk without waddling . As a result of the above ive muscle loss and lack of energy. Having previously been very fit and active, So it certainly does exist
im a self employed , builder . I go out to work everyday, physically working sometimes after 2 to 3 hours sleep. the most i get is 5 hrs, usually wake up from the pain in my joints , this has been going on since getting over covid in November.
Although i get your point about public service workers or indeed anyone who can get paid sick , it is a great vehicle for free loaders .
Whinney although there’s no obvious cure for your situation I’m hoping you don’t give up and try to eat as much fresh fruit as possible which will help in your predicament. Also I’ve had a lady near me with the same issue and she’s been on MSM organic sulphur which has speeded up her recovery and alleviated her joint pains— just thought I’d share.

Can't really argue against it today, I'll be buying a few more packs of disposable masks.

The law's the law.

Should we just do nothing then?
Apparently that’s exactly what we should do for now.

According to Dr. Angelique Coetzee, the South African doctor that first raised the alarm, so far the symptoms have been mild.

Some men complained of being “tired”. Turns out this variant may just be a form of “man flu”.

She says older more vulnerable patients may have severe disease but there’s no evidence of that yet.

If it is mild this variant may end up ending the pandemic. It spreads even more rapidly than the Delta variant, and will no doubt out compete other variants and become dominant. Let’s hope that’s the case.

Yes let’s wear masks again like they have done in Germany and Austria d*ckhead

Pointing out countries which have imposed mask mandates for months (including masks of a 'higher grade' rather than surgical or cloth) and yet have still seen (sometimes synchronous) rises in cases doesn't help sadly. Those who clamour for mask mandates and vaccine passports on transport/retail/hospitality rarely engage with the many examples where they have utterly failed.

Should we just do nothing then?

We are not doing nothing though. We have had periods of time where we have had retail/schools/pubs shut for months. We have spent an astronomical amount of money on trying to track and trace a respiratory virus which can be spread asymptomatically (exactly the thing Chris Whitty explained to SSC we shouldn't do because it is pointless). We have vaccinated large parts of the population and embarked on a booster/3rd dose (however you want to call it) for the most vulnerable. This is not nothing.

Last year we had plastic screens, dots on the floor telling people where to stand, one-way systems, bizarre rules (substantial meal / scotch egg nonsense). Instead of questioning whether these methods even work some people clamour for more despite seeing such interventions completely fail in other countries.

I'm repeating myself but most of the measures were advised against by the WHO as recently as 2019. Even many of the 'public health' academics (most of whom I now hold in very low regard) were advising against them in early 2020. They then lost their minds and supported border closures and lockdowns (I have to confess I supported the spring 2020 one).

Yes, this might be great news:

These were in unvaccinated people too so if the vaccines work we could all get a mild disease and, become immune and the hospitals can get on with usual wintery business. Fingers crossed!

That's really encouraging news. If it is more transmissible yet less dangerous then I agree. We should welcome it here. Obviously still try and protect the at risk but that's it.

Correct, if you think you’re vulnerable stay in
What if they work/people in the household work/ have kids that go to school?
How do they get their shopping? Attend medical appointments?
Sure you know it’s not exactly possible for someone to just stay in

Of course he knows, it's just easier for people like him to condemn the vulnerable without a second thought rather than put a mask on for 2 minutes when in a shop.

Just like it’s easier for people like you to condemn the unvaccinated and agree with their segregation. And yes I won’t be wearing a mask as I am exempt

How does the exemption actually work then, what evidence has to be produced at say a shop or getting on a bus to re- enforce people’s claims of exemption, as in past periods of restrictions I have seen young people entering shops in small groups, all claiming exemption?
You have to remember we are in a pandemic, so vulnerable people are concerned, so it is fair to say they should feel confident that all measures are in place including invalid exemptions being excluded from restricted settings.

It's not remotely similar, yours is a choice. I can't choose to avoid people with your mindset.

Alternatively, you could choose not to leave the house because of all those vaccinated people wearing masks infringing on your eyes.

That’s what cracks me up about it, it’s like mask wearing is asking people to have a leg amputated or something.

Don't speak sense br14. It doesn't matter what a South African doctor says with first hand experience of this variant. It only matters what our country's medics say. 😎

I am exempt until you can point me in the direction of any country or state where mask mandates have brought down cases/hospitalisations/deaths. Other than allowing virtue signallers to sneer at their fellow human beings they are useless
