End of the BBC

43p
I doubt it's the end of the BBC (as per thread title). The fact that it's the end of the license fee is a good thing IMO. They'll need to find new ways of funding, which is long overdue.

43p a day for public service broadcasting, giving artists and producers freedom to create things without the need to pander to 'the market'. Uncovering massive talent and giving opportunities to lesser voices. Live sport without adverts.

A madness to think the license fee is a bad idea.

Hardly "madness". You obviously use the service more than I do. Make it subscription, or have adverts, no problem. Having a tax to subsidise it is now an outdated model.

Mrs Brown boys - 6-year deal Brian O'Connel signed in 2020. That show is absolutely brutal.

I can't stand Mrs Brown's Boys, but it is watched by millions of people on the BBC its then exported and watched by millions more, then it goes onto other platforms and watched on repeat by millions more over time.

Same goes for other programs, it's radio output and online platforms. They are immensely popular and used by all age groups.

BBC bitesize was a lifeline when I was trying to home teach my son as all the other sources were woeful.

The BBC is being hammered by the Tories for purely political reasons and a sell off or commercial advertising only will ultimately effect us all negatively.

The BBC is just a Tory propaganda channel these days. And their website is crap. Read an article on there from the US/ Canada section yesterday that repeated the same paragraph twice and then changed tense mid sentence in the next line so that it made no sense at all. Useless tw@ts. Almost as terrible as The Gazette or The Guardian. Journalism is sh*te these days in this country. Went downhill when I quit the business and decided to move in to the Arts instead.

Exactly.
Why are those who don't watch it punished? Having a license to watch a privately owned TV is a ridiculous idea.
Making it a subscription service is the way to go. People can sign up for year (like Amazon or Disney+ for example) or monthly (like Netflix and Now TV) giving people the freedom of choice to drop in or out when they want.

Always been a State Broadcaster.
Abolish License fee entirely.
Create one National Radio [BBC Radio UK] and one National TV Channel [BBC UK TV]
Foreign Office / MI6 and BFBS co-ordinate Foreign Broadcasts.
Create two UK subscription TV Channels:
1. Rolling News Channel
2. History / Drama / Archive

Public service ie: for the public & paid for by the public.... I've little doubt younger - internet: everything is free - types just don't get it. I have issues with the BBC very London / Metro & lacking balance, seems very preachy now - current affairs & news esp, though not only.... however it is still, by far, the best news outlet there is, IMHO esp when compared to the printed press.

As for adverts, no thanks. ITV is unwatchable & Sky is little better.... it should be law that if you pay a subscription your service should be advert free.... else free & with adverts.

I'd pay subscription for ad free BBC... though think it benefits everyone & current setup is OK.

It needs to survive on its own - it's ridiculous people are threatened with Bailiffs and going to Prison for not paying

We live in a 'free' country - everyone can make their own choices on the media they want to consume

If viewers and listeners want the BBC it needs to be by subscription.
Its archaic and out of date to make everyone pay a license fee and criminalise those who dont want it or use it.
The Foreign Office used to pay for Foreign Language and overseas broadcasts, until they handed it to license fee payers.
Let the F.O pay for the foreign channels.
Why make UK license payers carry the cost of services the majority dont use nor understand?

Agreed, but I would also add how often does the Beeb advertise its own programmes? Not advert free at all.
