Electric and Gas Cost

Scrap the vat rise , & this nonsense subsidising green energy which is far more expesive then bulding nuclear power plants , all these windmills etc do not work & are subsidised to lhell just to make us look green ....nuclear is the future , sooner we grasp it the better , Rolls Royce are the experts, let them do their thing & get independant powerwise ?
A lot of this is absolute crazy talk: wind power does work and is proven and is so much cheaper to maintain and run. You do realise you sound ridiculous? It’s like you don’t even get the need for sustainable energy, which is a worry

Have you seen the cost of storing electricity in batteries? Close to £300 per MWh and that's before youve produced the electricity to go in them! Plus the amount stored is measured in hours not days.
Setup costs are not insignificant but the savings more than make up for it. Industrial scale battery farms have saved hundreds of millions in Australia and are being built in other countries. I believe the Tesla built one in south Australia paid for itself in about 2 years.

They don’t just store energy for power cuts or cloudy wind free days either. They also allow the grid to store energy when it’s at it’s cheapest (occasionally it even goes below £0 so they’re paid to take it) and sell it back or use it to reduce prices when it’s at it’s most expensive, reducing prices for the consumer at the same time.

Fracking is good in the wide open spaces of the USA and Australia but a full on disaster in built up areas.
The very nature of it completely changes the hydrogeologicl infrastructure..... infrastructure that has remained undisturbed for 1000s of years.
Nobody can predict with any accuracy what happens to the pathways.

Make explosions underground to release inflammable gas.... just the sound of it is ridiculous in built up areas.
Check out Queensland.....

That had nothing to do with fracking, there was no gas contamination, it’s been disproven.

some of the people claiming were found to have attached gas lines to there tap and were subsequently charged with fraud.

What about them bigger picture then? We should be reducing our reliance on gas, not looking for more

I’m not saying it’s the answer at all just that the claims above were false, there have been genuine cases but they were due to local ground contamination not fracking.

For me I’d make solar on all new properties mandatory, I’d expand the biogas industry with further subsidies, though this can be as temperamental as wind power. I’d also be heavily subsiding ground source heat pumps where viable. I’d also develop nuclear but only for topping up the grid not for main source.

My brain hurts but this will help somewhat won’t it?…

If I give bigger numbers on my meter readings over the remaining term on my deal, then when the standard rate kicks in I’ll have already ‘used/paid’ for some of it at the cheaper rate so will save some money (for a short period)? Only risk I can see is if someone comes and reads my meter in the meantime?

Cracking idea 💡 as long as your meter is in your house. A bit risky if it’s a new build one where they can access the cabinet from your drive.

That’s the wild thing I find about some of the comments on here: some people think the environment is a “nice to have” and not a necessity.

Is it the lobbying of the oil and gas firms that's holding the country up, together with the directorships they'll be offering to their representatives in parliament?

We're providing 25% of our electricity already by wind power, and the wind is here to stay. How long before we can hit 100% and then start to get rid of gas by expanding further. We're in the early days still of green energy development, with technological advances efficiency will only improve.

The sooner we can stop drilling and producing toxins that will be around for thousands of years, the better.

I was tipped off by Martin Lewis in September '21 so I signed up for a new all electric deal with EDF which began November '21 for £108/ month ( a £28/ month increase from my previous) At the time it did seem like a big jump, but considering its till November '24 I feel very happy at the moment

This is the wisest post on here. I'm nto sure if Wind can provide 100% of our electricity but it shoudl get close. And Hydro should be able to fill in the gaps.

Especially if household electricity demand is reduced via Solar and Heat pumps. We already have a way of storing the wind when we have excess so the scaremongering about intemittent supply is just incorrect. We probably need more on that though, I've invested in a company that creates super capacitors to store excess energy and help us balance the grid. In reality we need a mixture of thigns like that. It does mean we'll need batteries: the dirty side of clean energy but We'll all have these in our cars anyway, so maybe a vehicle to grid system?

It was green energy. I updated. Sorry for the panic
I'd edit the original post else you'll have people doing this all week lol

Quite lucky in that I shop around constantly for energy so always been on the cheapest deal, yet somehow so far have managed to avoid having a firm go bust on me. Currently with Outfox the Market but fixed rate expires Feb 20th, annoying as did consider a 3 year fix last year but decided against it! Oh well.

Will ride out the variable rate and see what happens.
On a fixed price with Scottish Power at moment and price is ok. Think it might expire some time this year though. Bought a new build with solar panels, I dont know how much they save us though. Even builders when we moved it said they knew nothing about them. They are just there, lol.
Worth looking into as I think your tariff has to support it for you to get the benefit?

Some houses have the ones that heat hot water.
Not at all.

It is a way of providing affordability, security and reliability of energy in this country.

Stretching the COP targets will provide time to find better sustainable options down the line.

We saw how useful turbines were last year when the wind didn’t blow enough…..
Thats why you need diverse renewable sources. You're unlikely to have days where the wind doesnt blow enough, the sun doesnt shine enough and there isnt enough rainfall all at once, but will probably need something available for peak capacity such as nuclear.

They obviously do work as it provides 25% of UK Power

Fracking often damages the water supply, methane is partly soluable in water isn't it?

We could do so much more renewable as well as mini nuclear reactors - shortage of energy is a recent problem but needs long term planning and investment.

Energy conservation is still fairly poor in this country

How many on here

Do not have 150mm loft insulation?
Do not have wall insulation but could have?
Wash their clothes above 30 degress centrigrade
Have a boiler over 15 years old?
Live in a draughty property?
Heat little used rooms?
Have a fridge over 10 years old?
Do not have LED lights in all their property?
Loft insulation is cheap or free if on benefits but can cost decent wedge to get done for a good sized house. wall insulation not suitable for all properties. Washing clothes above 30 is sometimes required, and most washing machines generally have standard 30C cycles anyway now. Replacing a boiler can be an expensive project again if youre not on benefits. Drafty properties can be cheaply resolved in some cases, in others it can be expensive depending on the cause. LED lights can help but depends which ones you buy as some are expensive or dont work well.

Ultimately buying a new fridge, boiler, loft insulation and a full suite of LED lights will save you money but probably some years for you to make any actual savings so depends how much money people have laid around.

they still do manual meter reads just less often. If you suddenly submit a massive reading just before a tariff change that's likely to trigger a threshold for a manual check. If you're on a smart meter they can read them remotely

And the earthquakes in the North West of England had nothing to do with Fracking either.
That's why it's been suspended.

Here's a lake on fire next to a fracking site. BOOM!
