Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule

Tailgaters really **** me off. It’s just a reflection of our ever increasingly aggressive and selfish society.

Now, I drive at the limits but a lot of people seem to think the speed limit is a suggestion. I never speed up when being tailgate.

I often slow down but afterwards I wonder if it’s worth the possibility of a road rage incident or even a accident. Saying that, even sticking to the limit has some people spitting feathers.

Because it would serve them right. Tailgating is illegal, and also the sign of a bad and angry driver. The type of people who deserve winding up
There's not really a justification for deliberately trying to wind other road users up. Touching your brakes if someone is right behind you is also pretty dangerous. Anyone who drives around believing that other road users "deserve winding up" is also showing signs of bad driving. It just adds to the problem of tension on the roads - which we can all do without.

Well they shouldn’t tailgate then…

I had one dangerously close behind me when I was driving at the speed limit once, and he was so close, I could communicate with him throught the rear view mirror. I started shouting ’I‘ll open the boot shall I? You can get inside it!’ and waving my hand to beckon him into the boot or to get past/closer. He got the hump and when the road split into a dual carriageway he sped off ahead, pulled over and got out for a fight.

Of course I just slowly drove past pointing and laughing and blowing him kisses.
As if I’d stop to have a fight on a road. Total idiot. He’d have got the shock of his life if I did mind, as I’m officially what’s known as ‘a big unit’.

So is brake checking - arguably more dangerous too!

Funny that on the Highway Code thread you argue that cyclists break the law more than drivers but then you are boasting how you deal with a driver breaking the law by breaking the law yourself to annoy them. Irony overload.

And does anyone wonder why there are so many accidents on the roads with drivers gambling with their safety (and that of those around them) in a 2 ton metal death box just to annoy someone. Step out of that car and most of them wouldn't dare say anything to the other driver.

It's totally pathetic. Why can't people just chill out on the roads??

Does your car put the brake lights on during regen? Do you have different regen modes?

On mine, on max regen it stops extremely quick, certainly don't even need to brake. I'd have to switch out of regen to even use my brakes!

I wondered this when I test drove the ID3 - I wasn't sure when using the regen mode if the lights came on but thinking about it I suppose they will have to as you are artificially slowing the car down.

I am chill on the roads. Tailgaters deserve all they get though.

Love that typical cyclist hysterical quote "2 tonne metal death boxes". It amuses me how over the top cyclists get when they try and justify breaking the law!

From mine: it looks like they don't come on immediately, if the region isn't high the slowing down is just like quick engine braking, but as you get slower the lights come on.

As I have said to you before - I am not justifying any cyclist breaking the law. I hate cyclists breaking the law as much as you do as it gives us a bad name which in turn makes it less safe on the road for me.

Any cyclist who thinks it is justifiable shouldn't be on the roads - much like a driver who brags that they break the law themselves whilst calling out others ;)

well, touche!

Fair point. I just really hate tailgaters. it's symptomatic of the selfish, "me first and sod the rest of the road users" attitude that some people have. The same attitude I see from cyclists when they go through red lights. It's just frustrating so I try to do something about both: I'll pull up cyclists who skip red lights if I can catch them. Not a lot you can do about tailgaters except express your annoyance by slowing them down.

Cool - the ID3 has a strange 'cruising' mode which just feels like you are in a normal car with the clutch pressed and the other regen mode. Presume mode 1 the lights don't come on and mode 2 they do as it slows you down pretty quick.

That was one of the things I really enjoyed about the ID3 - you can drive around and barely touch the break. I'd imagine you get thousands and thousands of miles out of a set of disks and pads!

It really isn't worth winding someone up to that effect. Don't know if you are old enough to remember Kenneth Noye. He got into a road rage with a young lad, they got out to confront each other. The young lad was some sort of martial arts expert, Noye had a knife and stabbed him to death.

Best thing to do is just pull over and let then pass. I always think it's better to have them in front if me so I can see them easier, rather than keep looking in my rear view mirror and not concentrating with the traffic ahead.

I don't think all tailgaters are selfisih as you say, I think the majority of them are just plain ignorant of what they're doing

They really have no idea that they're tailgating, they don't know what it is and don't realise they're doing it.

Which is why I was asking for the TV message to come back on our screens (or an updated version of it!)

I agree with your frustration, it makes me angry AF.

I used to try and wind them up but now I just pull over on a duel carriageway / motorway. Mrs Molten is a nervous passenger so I get told off for driving unlike Miss Daisy.

Yeah...however it's not that simple.

I hope VW have thought of the brake thing. In my car one of the brakes has seized before. It gets water in it and because you're not braking it doesn't rub off so they can oxidise quite badly. I think some car makers have started getting their cars to lightly apply the brakes every now and then when the wipers are on to scrub the water off. I would have though VW would have done this.

But in general, yes, it's wild how little you use the brakes in an EV. Just another addition to the cheaper running costs

Hmmm interesting. The next car may well be the ID3 for us so I will ask them about that. Cheers (y)
