Soz if this is elsewhere but I can't find it. But they were saying that Mitrovic with 40 goals is two short of the 'all time' record for the second 'tier'. That's utter utter bolleaux innit?
Given Camsell scored 59 in 37 league matches in the second tier for us in 1926-27 season.

Whittingham scored 42 for Pompey in 1992-93 which is I think what they are referring to.

As is oft the case Capy, you are correct and it is utter utter...

For some bizarre reason they use the start of the Premier League as the cut off point.

He's already got the Championship record, if you class the rebrand as a break, but it makes no sense to ignore pre-1992.

I posted this a few weeks back, but it’s interesting how a lot of pundits and writers and commentators bang on about Premier League records, forgetting Greaves and Dean and Charlton and everyone else, but then start talking about how many league titles Manchester United and Liverpool have won. Sometimes in the next breath.

It's actually the championship re-brand which came later. The 2nd tier became the First Division when the PL was formed for the 1992/93 season. The Championship re-branding happened for the 2004/05 season. Guy Whittingham scored his 42 in the first season of the First Division being the 2nd tier.

Mitrovic's 40 is still a long way behind Camsell's 59.

I'd argue it's rare for them to not talk about Greaves, Dean & Charlton, as they all played for "big" clubs and so they'll bang on about them forever, in the same way as they do about West Ham and their historical players.

What they normally forget is records / players who didn't play for a fashionable club, and then all of a sudden it's the start of the PL that time began.

No, I know, I'm saying he's already broken the Championship record.

They announced it at the time.

I don't understand their reasoning for using 1992 for the all time second division, it's just the usual Premier League-centric media.

The BBC said similar last night in their live feed, whilst at least crediting Camsell as holding the all time record:

I agree TBH, it’s more about the times you hear Kane is gunning for all the all-time Premier League record while Liverpool are aiming for league title number 20. It’s about how it sort switches quite seamlessly.

You either talk about the records of Greaves, Shearer, Dean et al when discussing Kane’s figures and Liverpool’s titles, OR you talk about Shearer, Henry and Kane and Liverpool’s solitary Premier League title. I don’t see how you can separate the two. I mean, I can… I just don’t think it should be allowed.

Guy Whittingham.... A blast from the last. I'm sure we were linked with him.

Wasn't he an ex soldier? Pretty sure he was late into the game.

Glad to see that somewhere got it right. R5 definitely said all-time. I listened again to make sure.

started in non league at 23 after leaving the army, joined Pompey at 25 and played on until his late 30s

Brian Clough scored 43 goals from 42 league appearances in 1958/59 season.
George Camsell`s 59 goals was in 1926/27 season.
Boro did win the Second Division in that season of Camsells. No such luck with Clough because Boro finished 13th in the league. Clough actually scored 13 goals in the first 8 games of that season - our defence let in 10 goals in the same games.

Gary Lineker, and to a lesser extent Ian Wright, seem to have missed out on 'Premier League History' . I'm surprised they don't say more about it on MotD when Shearer starts reminiscing.

To be fair, whilst Camsell was clearly a goal scoring machine... the general standard in 1926/27 won't have been what it is today. Probably a totally different game too.

I think it's fair enough to have different records.

The standard in 1992 was completely different to today, but they're happy to use that "record".

It's not fair enough at all.

59 is the record and likely always will be.

What would be fair enough is if they said Mitrovic has the record for most goals in a 46 game second division season, which he does, but that makes his record less impressive since he's had more games to score in than the 42 that used to be available.

Let 5Live and TalkCrap have their moment.
Last night they were purring over Fulham - the latest yo-yo club of London.
