Commonwealth Games Birmingham

Massive issues apparently this evening gettting into the gymnastics. Huge queues
and poor organisation meant most people didn't get in until after the session started.

John Boy Smith with the gold
From the Independent
Commonwealth Games 2022 - Marathon

Johnboy Smith, the new Commonwealth champion in the men’s wheelchair: “It’s surreal, mate. I’ve worked so, so hard for this. I’ve got to thank my team behind me, my family. I’m not going to lie, whoever came up with that course I might take them to court and sue them, that was so, so hard. But I’ve been training non-stop for 16 months for this. Starting at 4am. But it paid off.

“It’s bittersweet for me. Dave got a flat, I pressume? He had me. By mile six he dropped me. Then I turned around I assumed he had a puncture. The better man didn’t win today. He deserves gold and I should have got silver. But these things happen. Your majesty, if you’re watching, David Weir deserves a knighthood. Make it happen.”

Gutted for Weir. He was leading when he got his flat tyre and didnt have a spare. He carried on with a ouncture to the end incredibly.

Bit odd that England have only bothered to put one athlete in the Mens Marathon being run at the moment. Selling the spectators short frankly.

It’s prob because there is no team England team set up it’s gb athletics or gb swimming or British cycling there is no England cycling etc so our teams and our squads and our structure are representative of that so it’s hard to create a team like that for a one off event.

You saw The real team gb athletics last week in Oregon.

I was there yesterday for the first day - Badminton in the morning then table tennis afternoon/evening - featuring an epic struggle between Australia and Canada that lasted 3 hours and hour longer than nearly every other match. It was gripping stuff as they slugged it out. In the end Aussie Dillon Chambers who triumphed over two highly ranked Canadians against the odds. At the end he collapsed into his mother's arms and I presume his wife too (D Chambers on her back). In the morning there was Sam Ricketts for Jamaica who was a real personality and quite some player too.
Great to see some different sports and you see the personalities shining through and great to see some great little stories.

Birmingham in the 60s and 70s was a hotbed of musical creativity. Ivy League, The Fortunes, Spencer Davis Group, Moody Blues and then came the folk scene with Joan Armatrading and of course The Move, Roy Wood ELO in the 70s. Heavy rock bands Black Sabbath, Led Zepp.

Prob true to say it fell away (and Birmingham did go through a poor time 80s and 90s economically) despite the odd successes like The Editors. The Bhangra scene is obv a big thing. With the regeneration in Brum maybe we will see a continued revival. But generally I agree Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield have probably produced more artists.
Spot on Daffs. Producing two of the greatest rock bands is enough for any city, and you didn’t even have to mention the mighty Slade…

It is a great atmosphere around the place, watching coverage on big screens etc. Lots of activities. Well worth looking for tickets and/or making a visit to West Midlands where there is free train travel with your ticket (not today obviously).
