That is shocking - ref comments to wilder

Dermot Gallagher analysing Man Utd goal against Brighton (which was similar keeper comes out to punch, misses and claims a foul) said it’s not a foul, “I think the goalkeeper is not strong enough”. Interesting that he is using the same language, suggesting there is nothing unusual about refs taking this view.
Interesting indeed. Former referees and former keepers saying it’s not a foul, but the players and managers who were on the other side of it who will have clear bias, have equal weighting. Hmmm

He was acting as a pundit though, not as an official

All about opinions but if a ref says "he wasn't strong enough" particularly when you're talking about an incident like that where it's going to take minimal effort to knock the keeper off balance so he misses the ball, then the ref is unintentionally admitting he got it wrong.

He's saying he's seen the contact and he's seen that the contact has done enough to nudge the keeper away from the ball. How is is not a foul then? This isn't two players going shoulder to shoulder. It's one player reaching up to catch a ball and another trying to impede that in some way. The QPR fella isn't trying win a header is he? His goal is to impede another player with no intention of winning the ball.

Are we now saying it's ok to try and deliberately nudge keepers off balance trying to claim crosses as long as you don't use too much force?

As for Steffan looking for it. Why would he be looking for it? It's coming straight to him at an easy height to catch. He doesn't throw himself to ground as if he'd been taken out (although chance are he'd have got the foul if he had, such is referee logic at times). It makes no sense for him to be looking for it. Particularly at that point in the match.

I wasn't when I first saw, but the ref has confirmed it for me that it was a foul with those comments.

Your making assumptions I would say

The red could easily be inferring that the contact made wasn’t enough to put someone off balance.

Steffen is a big unit. The ref may have been swayed by that. No comment on the incident itself but a big unit can easily be knocked off balance by a much small person. It's all about timing and position. It's how small fighters can put much bigger guys down in martial arts combat.

any contact on the keeper prior to getting the ball is automatically deemed a foul, what makes this more rediculous is that the player contacted hte keeper but didn't even go for or attempt to go for the ball.

I will say this though, our defenders should have protected our keeper better. Lenihan left their CB free to push our keeper, that's poor. Out marking as schoolboy, Dijksteel

1) Lenihan is touch tight (red square), Dijksteel, wrong side of their goalscorer (purple). WTF!
Untitled.gif

2)Lenihan is pushed away by their player too easily, Dijksteel that isn't a good position according to any coaching I've done, you are not goalside.
Untitled.gif

3) Lenihan takes a forearm to the neck needs to be stronger back. Dijksteelnow moving backwards which makes ot difficult to outjump the man behind, he's got himself into a really bad position through initially not being goalside
Untitled.gif

4) Their player has been allowed a run on our Keeper and grabs his shoulder preventing him jumping (this is now a foul) but the keeper should have been better protected. Dijksteel in all sorts of bother now trying to mark the goal scorer
Untitled.gif

5) We can now see that Dijksteels bad positioning leading to back peddling mean he has no purchase to jump and challengehis man, you can see his body crumpling under their goalscorer. You can also see their player is pulling Steffens shoulder, stopping him reaching his full elevationUntitled.gif

6)Dijksteel didn't get anywhere near winning the header. Despite the pull on Steffen the goal would still have ben preventable of Dijksteel had done the basics, get goalside of your man. Lenihan, basics, protect your keeper.

I’m more convinced from them stills that Steffan misjudged it. He hasn’t been pushed 3 yards from that contact

His legs are positioned in a forward motion too which shows he made a conscious decision to go in that direction

no but he has had his shoulder held down, try jumping with someone holding your shoulder down.

If he's not impeding him why have his hand on his shoulder?

I don’t know how you decipher he’s been held down in those photos, you can’t really get the full context from a still. In my opinion he wouldn’t have ended up where he’s ended if he’s being held down

I guess we’ll never know from tv or still photos.

his hand is on the keeper, so he's interfering with him, it's a foul.

I was about 8-10 foot from it as it happened, the perfect view, I saw exactly what happened. The images and text is simply telling you what I was perfectly positioned to see.

Steffen wasn't able to jump to his normal height to reach the ball because of it, the defender was playing the man not the ball, it was a foul.

touching is not the same as interfering, I think a better word is impeding

Putting the foul on the keeper to one side, what about the foul on Dijksteel which is very clear as he actually ends up being pushed downward as the ball comes in

There's usually three or four fouls at any given corner. Whether you get them or not is down to luck. I'm fairly sure when VAR is used they just turn it off at corners.

“you can see his body crumpling under their goalscorer” - yes i think most people would crumble if they have large adult male pushing down on their neck 😆 I believe it’s called a foul in this particular sport 😵‍💫

I’m surprised to hear Dimi take this stance as wasn’t he a victim of a similar ref debacle at ewood?

The infamous hignett walkout game
