A sensible Sunderland supporter

I have a browse on the Sunderland forum now and again. When it comes to the Boro the way the majority speak about us is pretty embarrassing. However, I came across this post from a mackem. His post reads as follows:

Fwiw Tripper, I think some on here are 'mag like' in their views on other teams including Boro, which is very strange given we haven't won a major trophy since 1973 and have played the sum total of four games in Europe. Since I began supporting the lads mid 60s, I'd say Boro have been more "successful" than us, and you are bound to have smaller crowds than us given the smaller population catchment area. That period in the 90s to noughties where you built the new stadium, got to 3 finals iirc and had big name players coming through the door totally upstaged us which was of course hard to take for us Safc fans as the mags were doing the same. Last night, you deserved the win, the crowd of 30k+ was excellent given your faltering start to the season (as well as population catchment area prevly mentioned), and the atmosphere generated was great . Your celebration of the win was exactly what we do when we beat the mag scum and probably lasts ten times longer tbf. Quite why so many on here are rattled by your joyous celebration of beating your derby rivals is absurd, and so what if the players came round applauding your excellent vocal support - why the feck shouldn't they ?? We didn't perform as we have been doing recently, so it wasn't a great game but I'm sure we will both be top half come May, not sure about top 6, but you never know . I'd be more than happy for us to be first and yous second - never thought I'd say this after 1975 cup loss when Hicktons penalties knocked us out and this 14yo lad detested Boro for years to come ! Got no time for that ****** Teeside Steve, but happy to engage with sensible lads of any opposition.

It's taken a long time, but I think I've finally found a sensible Sunderland supporter. Can't disagree with any of that.

We don't like to see such sensible posts - they do not belong on a football message board.

The goal was offside, the players showed no class, the ref was biased, we should have got 3 penalties, most the players should have been sent off, the small town crown was pathetic etc.

Good post, no doubt he'd have been shot down & account temp suspended by admin ;)

I have always said Sunderland is a very well supported club - it was nicknamed the "Bank of England Club" a sort of Chelsea of the 1930s with very high spending and took most of the support of County Durham. Most of their support is hardcore too getting crowds of 25k plus when struggling in Division 1. They have spent well recently too and I expect them to finish top 10. Pritchard, Batth, Roberts, Clarke all done well in the Championship. The lad from Everton looks very decent and we were lucky their main striker was injured in the warm up.

On the night we did have 15 chances to their 8 with 5 chances on goal to their 2 - pretty clear the 1-0 scoreline reflected the game.

We have out chanced every team we have played this season except Swansea I think, based on chances created we should be top 6, but the ball has not run for us at times, especially away from home (deserved a draw at QPR, draw at Reading, draw at Watford and win at Stoke).

With Muniz in we now look a slightly better team than last season, but need to build up squad depth.

Sunderland fans are fine mostly. I personally know quite a few and all are good people and quite very similar to Boro fans (surprise surprise given we're all from the same part of the country). Ready to Go and Twitter is full of keyboard warriors and not a reflection of real life mainly.

Sunderland as a club is really well supported with a good stadium, training ground and academy. It's a proper football club in other words. I've no issue saying that.

Got to say I have a mate who is a Sunderland fan and is he is sound, im sure there is a few muppets that sound off but it's football, there is more to life.

All the Sunderland supporters I have worked with have been fine. Always a good laugh and didn't take themselves too seriously.
However, I have had the displeasure of coming across some awful specimens on trains on the way back from away games.
Maybe they change when they get drink inside them.

The post was more referring to people on the ready to go forum. Like others have said, Sunderland lads that I've worked with over the years have generally been decent lads.

I've spoken to a lot of mackems 1 on 1 and they all say almost the same thing; Newcastle is the one, but we are 2nd, and they hate us, they're jealous of our (and Newcastles) success in the 90s and 00s, want to beat us, look out for our fixtures and 100% 2nd to Newcastle we are the match they want to win, they want zero success for us, cheer at half time if we're losing and the score is read out etc. When you get a crowd of them or they're on social media arguing with us, thats when they say 'We dont care about Boro, but we're your cup final' which is quite tedious but its over now, we won, they lost, its their way of coping to say we are just another game and its just like losing to anyone else.

If you go to an away game and its just over half an hour away, whereby family, friends and work colleagues could support the other side; It might not be a derby (same city) but there is obviously rivalry, maybe even hatred.

Not sure where this over celebrating rubbish is coming from, the players did a walk of the pitch to thank the fans then went down the tunnel as they do every single game. Dont think we exactly celebrated any differently to any other game personally

I rarely go on other teams MB but followed a couple of links from here and to be honest most of their fans seemed sound to me stacks of good humour as well , just like most Boro fan to be honest

There was a poll out a couple of years ago in which you stated which 3 teams you viewed as your rivals.Newcastle and Sunderland had each other 1st(no surprise there!) and Boro 2nd,we,however had Newcastle 1st,dirty Leeds 2nd and the poor Mackems in 3rd place. They view us more of a rival than we do them!

There's a few on here could do with taking a leaf out of his book.

I think it's split three ways with the Mackems' in terms of how their fanbase views us.

You've got those who acknowledge it as being a derby but not the derby, and say that although it means that bit more than your average league game, it still pales in comparison to their rivalry with Newcastle.

You've got those who do see it as a derby and dislike us but say that they don't care to try and wind us up.

Then you've got those who genuinely don't care and just see us as bring another club. I'd say they're in the minority, all two of them 😉

Cast your eyes on the threads about us and frankly the posters are in the majority with their venom, spite and undoubted jealousy.

Pathetic childish terminology about two heads, alleged child abuse, crowd size, how this is our Wembley game etc the arrogance and ignorance is on display in abundance.

Why some Boro fans go on there and try and engage with a bunch of Neanderthal idiots surprises me.

Two reaccuring themes - they don’t care about us, we are not a Derby - they really do bleat about these factors too much. Perhaps they are trying to convince themselves?

I had a look on their forum before the game after a few post on here referring to it and I noticed a message board literally full of posts about Boro. Memories of games against us, posts about crowd trouble against us, posts about Ayresome Park. Do they do that when they play Blackburn or Huddersfield? No of course they don't.

They have a section of fans (more the younger lot) who say they don't care about us, it started as a way to wind up Boro fans now its just repeated by young kids. But ask any Sunderland fan who went to games between the 60s-90s and they'll tell you its a Derby. Its not as big as Newcastle but its the biggest game after that.

Theyve always had the edge on us for crowd size mainly due to the catchment area but on the pitch they've been in our shadow since the cup win in 73.

A Boro lad made a wind-up post on there right after the game, nothing derogatory just a bit of lighthearted banter and they went into complete meltdown. Must have reached 100 replies within an hour and he received the usual insults......... "nappy ripper", "mutant".

In the end admin had to delete the thread because of how vile some of the comments were. Still, it was just like losing to any other team to them.

😂 They’re all such d***heads man, the way they immediately use size of crowds as a measure of success, even this reasonable one does it straightaway.

I mean **** me, call me naive but I reckon the mark of a successful sporting club is winning (1) matches (2) trophies (3) not being in League One for four years and (4) not being a national joke.

If anything, having such a poor team since 1974 / 1898 and still getting such huge crowds should be a marker of shame, because there’s clearly nothing better happening in your town - I went there in 2003 and they didn’t even have a KFC, had to go to Newcastle or Boro to find the worst fast food restaurant in the world. Unreal.

I hate the mags but I can’t abide Sunderland fans for more than a second. Definitely a spikier rivalry for me. Glad we beat them pretty much every time we play them.

I would have Leeds at the top of the list - being the "Yorkshire Derby"

However most LUFC fans are indifferent

I don't like the mags but I do look on them as being a genuine big club to be fair and they do have a genuinely fanatic fanbase. To still pull crowds of 50k the two seasons they were in the Championship is undeniably impressive.
