Hayden Hackney Highlights

My 2 most memorable midfield performances of recent times:

- Howson v Spurs (last season - the coburn game)
- Hackney v Norwich

Take absolutely nothing away from Hackneys display on saturday, but I wish there was a compilation of Howson v spurs. I don't think people quite realise just how good it was.

By all accounts, in the next game v chelsea didn't Tuchel approach Howson after the game and tell him there's only ever been 2 times he's based a team talk around 1 person, and 1 of the was him?

He's definitely impressed me and surprised me.

I feared the worst, purely because we were in a rut, and we needed to stay up, first and foremost and he had 0 managerial experience (other than 3 games at Utd).

But so far, Carrick has exceeded my expectations. He's let the shackles off a few players, put players in their proper positions (Jones RW, Lenihan/Fry CB etc) and what he's done to Akpom is incredible. He's like a rolls royce in that #10 slot!

Still a long long way to go, but I'm actually excited with games and looking up at the table, whereas previously I was quite pessimistic and looking over my shoulder at the table.

Long may it continue too!
Totally agree it’s been a brilliant and exciting start. Can’t wait for the games to come back already

I think there has been a complimation

What impresses me is he keeps the ball moving quickly, maintaining the tempo but he also looks after the ball so very well too.

His successful pass completion stats are great and it's not like he's always just passing it sideways to the person stood 3 yards away like some midfielders do who have decent stats in this area. He's spreading it about the field playing longer passes through gaps and in behind people, passes with real penetration that risk being cut out.

Early days but I'm delighted for him and us.

The fact that he's happy to show for and to receive the ball and then turn and pass forward makes a huge difference to how the rest of the team can play.
Those little turns into space look natural as well so I'd expect he'll only get better as he gains more experience.
Fair play to the lad for seizing his opportunity, I just hope he's level headed enough to not get carried away and he keeps working on improving his game.

Thought he looked just okay in his first few appearances (goal aside), which isn't a criticism, it's probably understandable given the step up and his limited experience, but he's getting better and better with every game right now.

Young, local and free.
We were desperate for a midfielder and he's now slotted in like he's been in the Championship for years.

Fair play to him, he'll be living the dream right now.

Think Howson needs a mention too re: Hackney actually.

He's in a great position Hackney because he effectively has two mentors. One in the dugout and one on the pitch.

I'm sure Howson is absolutely thrilled for Hackney, but he deserves a lot of credit too. I don't think it's any coincidence it's looked so easy for him playing alongside someone with Howson's quality and experience.

I think, like all top players, most of the time he knows what he's going to do with it before he gets it. It's why he often looks like he has loads of time and space.

Yeah his first touch is brilliant. The playing style very much reminds me of Luka Modric. A long way to go before he mentioned in same breath but In style and composure you can see it

Just watch this video. We have developed a star here. What a talent. And the perfect tutor in Carrick

Hackney's first touch, the way he opens his body up is excellent, but what makes this even better is he's very aware of where the other players are, so he opens his body in the direction where he knows he's got a pass on. Then even better on from that, he's got the ability to make the pass and can do it in between the lines. He's not scared to pass between their players either, as he knows he can do it accurately. Can tell he must have been doing this for some time, it's not a recent thing. Awesome.

You can't really coach any that, you've either got it or you haven't, and it's extremely rare.

Couple that with him being able to tackle, also looks fit and has certainly got a shot on him, we seem to have a gem on our hands.

How on earth did this gem go unnoticed by Wilder?

I thought at the end of August we would been searching high and low for a CM in January window. Now the pressure is off.

We obviously still need cover at CM, but it's not a huge priority now Hackney is playing.

It probably was noticed (albeit at playing at a lesser standard in games, or not full intensity at training), but maybe as he was under the cosh, he didn't want to take the risk. Sometimes taking the risks will either get you fired or save your job though.

My mind is made up now, call off the search for a Howson partner, but we still need to find a Howson replacement. We need Hackney on a new contract though, and a long one, otherwise he could be playing in the prem next year without us.

Totally agree Festa - couldn't think of a better mentor tbh.

Howson could play s**t every game between now and leaving and i'd still love him.

I hope people like Howson and Friend come back to the club in some capacity. Absolute model pros.

I love Howson. What a player and pro.

Yeah, it's a small thing but also a big thing, but being able to execute those forward passes between players, along the ground, just adds so much as it allows us to keep momentum without losing a split second waiting for someone to bring the ball under control.

A lot of players at championship level will loft some of those passes to avoid the risk of them being cut out and intercepted.

I think a lot of that will be Carrick's influence, particularly given his comments on that training video. It's not just the accuracy of the pass that's important, it's the type of pass, the weight of the pass.

His passing has improved under Carrick from an already impressive 84.5% to 94.42%. Number of passes has increased dramatically from 29 per game to 66!

Carrick clearly sees the importance of having central midfielders who want the ball to feet and can look after it, rather than treat it as a hot potato. If you can get CM on the ball with a good range of passing you start to open the pitch up. He knows this from his playing days. Wilder primarily used his CM as a decoy to allow CBs to push on. Didn't work.

Howson is a a bigger data set to look at the difference in how we are playing:

Under Wilder 50 passes at 77%
Under Leo 54 passes at 86%
Under Carrick 62 passes at 87%

We are playing it through the thirds, trusting our midfielders to dictate the game, and we have options ahead and wide that are making runs (Forss, Akpom, Jones, Giles). It's a breath of fresh air, and any young CM player on our radar should be busting a gut to to get a move to this team and this maanger

Is he a Robson/kean style or as scholes type? He is linking the defence and forward up very well.. he is growing in confidence every game..

I think I have said it before but he seems to have that confident glide that good midfielders have, where he knows exactly where the ball is without having to look down.

Some fantastic phases of play in that highlights reel.

We've got super Hayden Hackney...
