re the foden situation - he needs to be played

Foden has had some stinkers playing for England, so not surprised that he didn’t start. I would have put him on for Mount though.
Only because Southgate asks him to play on the right where he’s not comfortable he needs to be central or left.

Aah the Foden conundrum, it’s easy to see why he doesn’t start or really figure for England.

Southgate has had a wedge on City winning the quadruple and doesn’t want to burn Phil out.

What a load of tosh Jedi! If every player spat their dummy out like you suggest Foden should do, the England team would be a lot worse off.

I'm pretty much Phil Foden's biggest fan on here and I agree that he should be in the team, but his success is partly down to his natural ability and partly down to his attitude, i.e. he isn't a selfish tosser who flounces off anytime he doesn't get his own way.

We are on course to win the group and whilst tonight's game - and the absence of Foden - was disappointing, there's no reason to get hysterical and suggest such nonsense as you have on this post.

There's been a lot of hysterical nonsense on the board about Southgate/England after the match, it's almost like certain people weren't able to vent after the Iran match so have two matches worth of anti Southgate bile to get out of their systems. I honestly think there are elements of Curbishley syndrome in the England fanbase and it will be interesting to see what happens when Southgate does leave and we don't turn into World/European champions overnight.

As for Foden, a brilliant player but like all flair players consistency can be an issue, but I agree he should have at least come on for Mount.

As for people slating the USA as poor and we should be beating them based on historical stats, teams improve over time and many supposed international minnows can now give decent sides a good run in a one off game. The overall standards between the best and worst international teams has narrowed significantly.

In all possibility, the best player in the world would have may be look ordinary in that team set up last night…
I’m not talking formation but attitude, they did what wales did and thought they’d walk it…
Then when they got pressed so much they couldn’t change their play and really struggled…
Bringing grealish on seemed to drive them forward a bit but they soon reverted to type..
We all seem to forget though, USA played well and contributed to England’s poor performance..
It’s going to make the wales game very interesting as I’m sure wales have more to motivate them and play better as under dogs…
My nails will be getting chewed that night…

Southgate has his favourites that’s clear, Mount being one of them. For me he’s offered very little in these first 2 games which opens things up for Foden to play a major part going forward.

I don’t get what Mount offers. Foden should start against Wales.
Careful.
Mount is adored on here.

Me, I think he makes doing absolutely nothing other than jogging about the place an art form. The Lionel Messi of doing nothing. Like actually nothing.

England won't ever win a trophy with Southgate in charge. He's too negative and too worried about losing a game of football. No killer instinct.

Whilst we are at it, what does Harry Kane have to do to be taken off?

When I looked at the team sheet to start, then those left on the subs bench, I couldn't believe what I was reading. Southgate picked a team not to get beat but leaving Foden and Rashford out of the starting line up was criminal in my opinion. There has to be more thought given to team selection for Tuesday's game against Wales or we'll be home before the postcards.

We are effectively through. We can only not go through if we lose by 4 goals or more to Wales.

If that happens then Southgate deserves everything he gets.

Fwiw I think we'll beat Wales. They don't have the legs the US do, and nobody will want to repeat this performance.

I don’t watch a lot of Premiership football these days, least of all Man City if I do. I haven’t therefore seen much of Foden, probably a few times in an England shirt - I don’t remember him being that outstanding - is he really that good? Could he change the game?

In contrast I could easily believe what I was reading. That starting lineup had just cruised a game against Iran, sticking with it is the most natural thing to do.

USA were different opposition sure and the subs needed to be made earlier to have a chance of winning the game certainly, but the starting lineup had no surprises whatsoever considering.

He is great in Man City’s system. He’s never really had any amazing games for England (or too many in the CL for that matter) and personally I don’t think last night would have been much different. But I suppose when you get a mediocre result people will always look to the bench and he is the next cab off the rank.

I’d like him to start on Tuesday, it is his chance to announce himself on a more global stage, he still has something to prove at that level without Pep’s guidance.
