Michael Carrick was delighted to give plenty of his squad an opportunity to impress in Saturday's mid-season friendly win over Hibernian.

The Boro boss shuffled his pack with an almost fully changed eleven turning out in each half at Easter Road, the Teessiders winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Chuba Akpom and Sonny Finch.

"I enjoyed it," Carrick said.

"It’s a chance for the lads to get some minutes, the ones who haven’t played and a great opportunity for some young players.

"Because the team’s being playing so well there are players who haven’t been able to get as many minutes as they would like, and I understand that. We’ve spoken about that in the past few weeks - how important those boys are for us for the rest of the season.

"I tried to be fair to everyone in a sense and pick two balanced teams for each half."

The Head Coach was pleased by the way Boro went about their business in what was the first match practice since the 2-1 win at Norwich City.

"There’s always something to take from games like this, and there were some good things. The young boys got the opportunity to express themselves and the senior boys looked after them well, and obviously it’s nice to win.

"All in all, it was a good day."

It's just a relief to hear someone speak in a positive but understated way rather than barely coherent bolleaux that manages to undermine 'the group' even when things have gone OK.
I blame Brendan Rodgers. He's the first one I remember starting the 'group' talk.

Was at the game. And was as good as can be expected with all the changes. Only McNair played the full 90. We looked like we were struggling a bit at the start of the second half but Giles and in particular Akpom were a class above. But if a feel good around the team at the minute. Lots of genuine spirit shown amongst the players at the end

Must admit it is a breath of fresh air to have him as manager.

My only concern is that the more good he does here means we start getting unwanted attention for him next year and onwards

Struggling in the what way ?

Hibs were dominating possession and the first real chance we had we scored. They should have done better with that chance at the back post
