So should you rate the current squad Bette than the one that got us promoted ?

How have we been a pushover? We've dominated pretty much every team we've played.
 
Karankas squad was a much better starting point than Wilder inherited. We’ve brought in 10 players up to now and still need more first teamers. Wilder just needs time when he has all the parts of his jigsaw and then we will enjoy the ride.

Dominating a game means nothing if the other team scores against us for fun. We have the worst defense in the league, and yet to keep a clean sheet. Karanka's squad was hard to beat, and hard to score against. That squad could grind out results. This one can't (at the moment).

Horses for courses I think, very, very different sides and styles.

I think this squad is probably better than the one we started 15/16 with, I don't think that squad would have went up, but Ramirez changed it quite a lot when he arrived, and Rhodes got some important goals too, both only came in January. AK spent about 30m too, this one is about £10m spent in Wilders time, but ~£25m in.

The squad we have now is more capable I think, or will be once we're done, and this one could play a range of styles and is better to watch. Results not going our way mind, and I'm sure some can't look beyond that.

Would be an interesting game, watching the two against each other.

We don't have the worst defence in the league, we've conceded the most in the division, there's a big difference. You might think we've deserved to concede each of those, but I don't not by a long shot (a lot of them have been long shots, or long odds), and a few of them should never have even stood, can't blame the defence for bad decisions.

Blackburn are 4th with a negative goal difference, only one better than ours, it doesn't mean a lot, not yet.

You're going to concede more, if you're attacking more. The inverse of this is the AK team, which defended more, and hence it scored less.

Not saying AK's tactics were wrong mind, far from it, I'm one of his biggest fans, and was defending his defensive style the entire time he was here, as the squad was much more geared up to defensive football, than attacking football.

I think the league is a little bit stronger now too, or at least it was last year.

We need some midfield steel. I honestly think if we don't add at least one tough tackling midfielder, a ball winner, to this squad before the window shuts, we'll be nowhere near the top 6. Team looks great going forward but the balance isn't there at the moment.

We're winning enough of the ball with the high pressure and we don't lose it as cheaply, we've averaged about 55% possession in 3 away games and 55% for 2 home games against two of the best sides in the league, it's a tough ask, having more of the ball than that, against those sides (for now).
 
Muniz , Larsen , forss , Akpom and watmore with Jones and giles could potentially offer more than those in the same position from the promotion winning side .

I agree with you to an extent Gaz we seem lightweight in the middle and teams have frequently walked through the middle of our midfield to the edge of our box without challenge. I agree we're too open and we need more steel or it'll cost us. I've seen a few posters say we need another body in there and I'd agree.

As for the possession stats, we have done well but it's not necessarily about gaining more possession for me it's more preventing goalscoring opportunities for the opposition in the possession they do have. We do seem very open and are gifting the opposition chances by allowing them to walk through us too easily. It might be just getting used to the system and new personnel and more training ground time could mean we tighten up but something needs to change in that area of the pitch for me. Be be that a new player or tactical tweak.
 
AK's was stronger, but there was no FFP regulations in 2015 and the parachute payments were lower for teams you have to compete with.

What would Karanka do?

Would he change a relatively successful back line? Would he stick dogmatically to his formation despite the need to tweak now and again? I think Karanka and Wilder are quite similar in some respects.. Karanka stubborn spikey and defensive at all costs. Wilder stubborn, single minded and...

You think only one player from a squad which went from 15th to 7th in half a season would get in the side which came second (level on points with 3rd)?
I disagree, and disagree more, seeing as we've improved that squad, but it will take some more time than others to realise this.

The strikers are the easiest to compare, as their roles don't change much, but our top scorer back then in the Championship (Nugent) had 8 goals in 40 games, Sporar got that in fewer games last year, and he's probably worse than all of our 6 current strikers. Watmore only got one less than Nugent and he was sub most of the season. Crooks would have got a game up front in the Karanka promotion side.

Downing wouldn't get in ahead of Giles in any game, and Adomah won't create as much as Jones, and certainly isn't as good going backwards.

I'd 100% take Stuani and put him up front, and Ramirez, maybe Fabbrini too, hard to say about the rest as the roles were very different.

Dimi might be a better keeper and suits Karanka's side, a lot more than Steffen, but Dimi wouldn't get in this side.

I am not quite sure what you are saying here. Are you picking players from our squad now and putting them in Karankas team, playing in a different formation and vice versa. Then saying our players now are better, but playing in Karankas formation? I also dont get the compare strikers bit when Karankas team was built on defence. Not arguing with you as everyone will have their own opinion but surely its more than just black or white?
