===
Kante + Munroe + Castledine + Ibeh + Mccabe are all under 21 for the new season so do not count towards the 25.
===
If we sign Browne & Devine and assuming the 3 OOC players renew their contracts we have filled the slots and will need to let others go out on loan or sold before we can sign anyone else.
===
Hamilton + Edmundon + Sene are the minimum id expect to be moved on, with possibly Bangura + Hansen + Burgzorg as well. It all depends on how many of the OOC players renew their contracts.

Any thoughts?

2 good players for every position plus question marks over Bangura, McGree & Conway due to injuries would take us up to 25

Brynn/Tobiasz
Brittain/Silvera
Malanda/Fry
Jones/Ayling
Arfsten/Monroe
Morris/Browne
Devine
/Gilbert
Whittaker/Hansen
Castledene/Sarmiento
Karlsbakk/Sene
Strelec/Ibeh

GK, RB, CB, LB, MF, MF, MF, ST

four new faces to replace Dieng, Borges, Hackney & Burgzorg.

Silvera as RWB, Fry over Edmunson, Gilbert as a backup in midfield. I think Hamilton will be off.

I’d say that’s the minimum there.. a light touch and manageable. Let’s see tho

I don't think we'll keep Borges and Bangura, if we can find somewhere for one of them to go, on the assumption that we can bring in another left back. I don't know which one I'd rather keep, to be honest. Bangura is a good player and good going forward, but his injury record is horrendous. Borges isn't good enough going forward or defending, so I don't see much point in that either way. We clearly need a starting left back, and then one of the backups can battle it out with Muroe, whilst he develops.

I don't think there's any chance that Hamilton makes the squad, and hopefully Sené doesn't either.

If we're keeping Burgzorg as a left winger, then I can't see him staying if we're going to keep Sarmiento and both of those are back up to Conway. I imagine we're probably thinking we've overpaid for Sarmiento, but we'll probably be willing to give him time, with him being younger, and not having had many minutes.

I can, however, potentially see us keeping Burgzorg as a "big lad" option to play up front, or just a general "hold the ball up option", for anywhere really, he's good at that, and it's something we don't have.

I think that’s a fairly good assessment
We obviously need to sign 2 keepers if we are not relying on youngsters

I should add I really like McGree, but I don’t think his body is ever going to allow him to play consistently. Same with Fry really, but I can’t bring myself to leave him out as he’s my favourite Boro player.

I don't think we're in any danger of filling the 15-25 positions down the pecking order to a point where players are going to be better than McGree, so on that basis we just keep him, and when he's available it's a bonus. Same with Fry to a lesser degree, as he's more reliable and some of his abilities are unmatched in our sqaud.

I suppose the ideal idea with McGree would be that the first XI is strong enough to keep him out of the team regardless, then we just use him as a excellent sub option for CM/LW/10. This might reduce his injury risk. Might be better to have him for 40 games of 25 mins, than 20 games of 65 mins etc. We do tend to struggle with the part of the game when we're flagging a bit, as our bench is normally a large drop off.

Looking a bit desperate if we sold Strelec and Whittaker also .
14 places to fill
And even thinner when we take Brynn out who is not good enough

Squad is very thin now.
I said a couple of weeks back that I expected us to sign 8-10 players. It could actually be 10-12. Fry is still an unknown like.

2 x GK
RB
CB?
LB
2 x CM (possibly 3)
3 x AM
2 x Striker

Add them to:

Brynn
Brittain
Ayling
Malanda
Jones
Fry?
Bangura
Munroe
Morris
Kante?
Whittaker
Sarmiento
Conway
McGree
Strelec?

A good number of incomings needed, together with some dead wood being removed. Should be interesting.

But this thread is titled “25 man squad”. Not “23 man squad” which we inexplicably ended up with following the January window.

It has become a huge job this summer, and expectations are much higher than last summer which makes it even tougher.

GK:
Brynn +2

RB:
Brittain +1

CB:
Malanda, Jones, Ayling +1
Fry?
Edmundson - out

LB:
2x new left backs. 1 starter similar mould to Brittain, one defensive minded cover
Bangura -out
Munroe - loan out or 3rd choice

CM:
Morris +3
Hackney replacement and cover, Morris cover

RW
2x new right wingers, preferably with pace and power

CAM:
Whittaker, McGree, Castledine

LW:
Conway +1 (Dobbin loan to buy please)

S:
Strelec +2 combination of pace and power needed with one option being a more target man type CF
Sene - out

That makes it approx 14 new signings needed, massive job!

Are expectations higher? We're likely heading into the new season with a weaker squad. Unless we improve on both quality and quantity throughout the squad (practically impossible with our budget) the play offs would be a hell of an achievement next year.

I think they’re higher. For most, Edward’s was a really uninspiring signing, the season prior was very poor. Contrast to this summer, we’ve come off a fantastic season although it fizzled out at the end, with a manager that the vast majority of boro fans believe in. Yes, both summer’s required a rebuild but I think given this season’s successes most are expecting another playoff campaign whilst last season most we’re expecting mid table mediocrity.

Not what I want, but realistically what we 'need' maybe.........

GK:
We have Brynn & Dieng on the books, although not amazing that is reasonable enough as to not be panicking and rushing to sign someone. If we get a new improved No. 1, great, if not a third choice is needed. +1

RB:

We have Brittain as a nailed on starter, with no real options other than Ayling who hasn't got the legs, and Dede who is unproven and been out injured. Need a signing, an athletic youth option maybe to bed in (signing type will depend on whether we wanta RB or a RWB I suppose)? +1

CB:

Probably our strongest area (unfortunately for Fry). We have Malanda & Jones as reliable starters, Ayling who Kim obviously rates as a ball playing CB, but a bit suspect defensively, maybe better as a RCB in a three ideally. I'll include Borges in here too, Kim hasn't worked with him yet, but as he likes a ball playing CB he could maybe utilise him similar to how he uses Ayling on the right (though obviously not together, and again probably better in a three). Outside of that we have Edmondson as a more agricultural option to bring on if teams are going direct against us, I'm also hopeful Hunt who we paid a decent fee for will be around the squad this season too. I think McCormick will be moved on as he'll be near 7th choice if Fry stays. +0 currently, maybe lose Edmundson if Fry signs on.

LB:

At the cursed monkey paw position of leftback, we don't really have anyone other than Borges, he'd probably be adequate cover but isn't dynamic enough going forward in either pace or attitude for what KH will want IMO. Bangura is good enough from the brief flashes I've seen of him, but I'm now convinced he needs to drop to a less intense level / league for his own good. Munroe is a possible bench option, but if we sign a starter a loan may benefit him more, again McCormick could be considered an emergency bench option I suppose. So definitely +1, we need a starter

CM:

We have first name on the teamsheet Morris, and that's about it! If Kante has triggered a permanent we need a DMC to cover Morris. McCabe is here but he seems to have been utterly bombed out since coming back from a poor loan. Unfortunately for Gibbo's pockets we need +3 cover for Morris, replace Hackney and another, (or +2 if McGree / Castledine are to be used in CM)

Right Forward / Attacking Midfielder:

We have Whittaker to start who has strengths (& obvious weaknesses). Although not utilised there as yet Castledine can play anywhere across the front three. Theoretically Sarmiento can play there too along with Hansen. I'd like to see a mix up / opposite attributes in all of our forward recruitment we have too many similar players. +1 starter, right footed with pace, power and skill.

No. 10 / Central Attacking Midfield / Deep Lying Striker:

Probably McGree as a starter, but he is unreliable, Castledine and Sarmiento as bench options along with possibly Strelec if we can get some physicallity in front of him. +0 on current squad, we need to lose players from 'behind the striker' forward positions to sign more IMO

Left Forward / Attacking Midfielder:

We have Conway to start once fit who also has obvious strengths & a few weaknesses. Castledine & Sarmiento can play there off the bench too, probably Burgzorg as well unless we are moving him on. Again I'd like to see a different type of forward to our current selection to compete with Conway (or free him up to be an option at No 9). +1 starter, left footed with pace, direct runner good crosser.

Central Striker:

We have Strelec, who I believe can score goals for us with time and space, what he can't do is occupy Champo centre backs, beat them then score. He needs a more physical or pacey player around him to develop a working partnership. It doesn't work with Conway. As with the two wide positions I'd like another 'type' here. Either an out and out speed merchant who is a good finisher (Archer under Carrick sort of thing), or a physical beast who can bully and occupy the defenders more than our small weak forwards can currently (McBurnie for Hull last season). Late in games we've rarely had an out ball, especially after Burgzorg was loaned out. +2 but possibly +1 'marquee' signing if we sign a left wing option and Conway returns to being a central striker.

So about 8/10 signings depending on formation (ie three at the back or utilising McGree and Castledine as CM's, or Conway as a 9), and obviously any outgoings we wanted to keep may need replacing too.

The big issue may be moving on players who aren't quite good enough that we want to improve upon. It's not too far fetched to say we have Dieng, Edmondson, McCormick, Borges, Bangura, Kante, McCabe, Hansen, Burgzorg and Sene who the manager doesn't want, maybe a loan for Ibeh too. Crazy to think that's an upper League 2 / lower League 1 first XI pretty much.

Lots of work to do Kieran, crack on!

I know, TLDR!

They certainly are. Last year general consensus was playoffs would be an achievement. Now we will be under pressure to at least match last year's result and we are 4th favourites to go up.

It's looking as desperate as we all thought at this time last year.
Obviously the depth and quality of bench isn't there currently, but it's not 'that' dreadful really.

------------------------Brynn-----------------

Brittain------Malanda-------Jones-------Signing

-----------------Morris---Signing----------------

Whittaker------------McGree--------------Conway

----------------------Strelec------------------------

Our options are complicated somewhat by the injuries to Conway, McGree and possibly Jones I suppose. We could even maybe start the season playong Hackney, Borges and Burgzorg if they're still here well into August. So first game we could line up like this, I doubt it'd be troubling the autos come Christmas obviously, but it's not far off the team that had us second most of last season.

------------------------Brynn-----------------

Brittain------Ayling-------Malanda-------Borges

-----------------Morris----Hackney---------------

Whittaker-----------Sarmiento-----------Burgzorg

-----------------------Strelec------------------------

I can see a a chunk of our deals happening late in the window, with the world cup pushing things back, along with not really knowing what we're dealing with financially until Hackney and Rogers next moves are confirmed (or not).

From what ive been told I think you can add a GK signing for Bryn and a Striker Signing in there too. And prvided the signings are on a par with the Brittain/Jones/Malanda/Morris level then i think we will have a good first XI. Depth would still be a worry mind
