25 Man Squad

From what ive been told I think you can add a GK signing for Bryn and a Striker Signing in there too. And prvided the signings are on a par with the Brittain/Jones/Malanda/Morris level then i think we will have a good first XI. Depth would still be a worry mind
That'll be good, I'm sure we'll sign three or four starters and maybe eight to ten incomings by the end of August in total, I'm just not as worried as some about stating the season without three new first teamers being in the door.

I may change my tune when we get pumped three nil away at Bristol on the opening day though......

I don't think we'll be signing a GK, and I don't think we should. Brynn has improved year on year.

21-22: Scottish Championship
22-23: League Two
23-24: League One
24-25: Championship #2 (8 appearances)
25-26: Championship #1

Last season was his first full season at this level, and although probably not a top-6 GK, in my opinion he did "okay".

Given his protectory year on year, and still only 25 years old (young for a #1 GK), there's no reason why he can't be better next season.

I arent sure what you are on about. Brynn is our only goalkeeper as the other two were released. We will have to bring in certainly one more if not two.

I'm a fan of Bryn, and agree he could improve going forward. I'm not basing this off my personal opinion, but what I was told well before the season ending, that we will be targeting a new number one over the summer.

We will definitely be bringing in another GK - 100% - My post was in reply to the suggestion we'll be bringing in another #1.

We have to bring two in anyway, we certainly don't need two who are worse/ no competition, so we have to be trying to get one who is at least better overall, or at least a better shot stopper. We'll likely end up risking a bit on an unknown, in the hope he's good, it's worth a shot.

It might cost us ~£1m for a Brynn backup, but only £3m who is more proven at this level, seems like really good value to me.

1. Brynn
2. Brittain
3. Panza LCH
4. Malanda
5. Jones
6. Ayling
7. Malacia LB or Alex Cochrane
8. Ryotoro AM
9. Bobcek CF
10.McGree
11. Morris
12.Maswanhise RW
13. Hansen
14. McNamara RB or T Miles
15. Sarmiento
16. Conway
17. T Davies CM
18. Kjerrumgaard CF ( Kyle Joseph in )
19. Divine AM
20. Baligizi AM CM AM
21. Patterson GK
22. Will Smallbone CM
23. Mason Burstow RW CF
24. Abu Kamara LW or Daka free
25 - THE DIAMOND - or Cirkin

Been holding back but we should have targets sorted so above is my EASY list , I have left 4 / 5 diamond signings off the list

Interesting...the northern echo don't seem to think that's on the cards.

I'd want to solidify our GK options for the future with our next #2 - We shouldn't really be in a position where we're bringing in 2 GKs every season, which is where we've found ourselves for a while...

#1 - Sol Brynn
#2 - Tommy Simkin / Pierce Charles
#3 - Aynsley Pears / bring back Joe Wildsmith on a free transfer.

I'd be trying to solidify Bryn as number two, to be honest, until he's ready to be number one, because I'm not convinced he's proven to be number one yet, not for a team that's trying to get automatic promotion.

I'm not writing Brynn off, of course. He's young and he will get better, but it's putting a lot of hope in him. For the money we'd need to spend on a better keeper, I think it would be well spent for something that's a practical guarantee. We need to be spending more money on maybes for other backup positions for the first team, so I don't see why we couldn't spend the same for a practically guaranteed number one goalkeeper, who is better.

Then for the third option, I just get somebody young who's young and promising, with a practical guarantee that he's got no chance of being ready this year, he's just an emergency. And if we end up needing the emergency, then we'll just have to live with it.

I think with Brynn's trajectory from Scotland -> L2 -> L1 -> Championship and improvement year on year, if he has continued that improvement then he will be a top 6 GK this season.

Unless we're going to spend £5 million on someone like Ivor Pandur, "a practical guarantee" is going to be very difficult to find in this league.
Seny Dieng was seen as a practical guarantee, and was he an automatic promotion GK?
In my opinion, Brynn is good enough for the club not to need to take that risk - which allows us to take risk / spend the money on other positions.

The third option will definitely be an older more experienced keeper, it's the done thing now across most clubs. The #3 acts as part GK / part GK coach.
Ben Foster did a podcast about it when he was a free agent (before he signed for Wrexham) - deciding on whether he wanted to be a #1 #2 or #3 because of their different roles within a club.

It's harder to improve each level you go up, though.

Improvement this year might be going from, say, bottom 10% for goals prevented to bottom 20% goals prevented or bottom 30% goals prevented. It's still a long way from being a top 6 shot stopper. He also needs to get better at coming off his line as well, along with his kicking, and calmness with the ball at his feet.

I don't think we would need to spend 5 million. I think Southampton only spent 6 on Peretz. Obviously, Trafford last year and Rushworth could go for big money, but it's mainly because they're so young. We could be buying somebody a 27/ 28 who we could have for three years and still have good resale. I'm not saying try and find the next Rushworth or Trafford, etc. Hull only paid 2 million euros for Pandur as well, and he was playing Eredivisie then.

Dieng was only two million, he wasn't good, but I don't think he was as bad as Brynn, and at least he could kick. He's clearly got a screw loose though, but I don't think anybody saw him as any kind of guarantee.

Unless we're fixed up in the goalkeeping coach capacity, the new one might be an older guy coming in as number three/ coach, but we could get a young lad in. The last few older guys we've got in don't seem to have worked very well though.

I agree it's harder to improve at each level - but he's continuously improved year on year. He won't be able to prove he can do it again unless he's given the chance.

Goals prevented is a bit of a flawed stat in my opinion. He's actually bottom 30% per 90 (putting him bottom 10% overall includes keepers who have played 5 games when Brynn has played 46 - a keeper in the negatives is always going to be lower with more games played).
Would individual mistakes by Ayling and Edmundson would have added -2 (at least) to Brynn's -6.64 too? - The difficulty it is to prevent the goal is subjective and not weighted properly in the stat.

The problem with the Peretz and Pandur comparisons are they come with the power on hindsight... Southampton paid £12m for Bazunu and he has the lowest goals prevented stat in the entire league (for two consecutive championship seasons). Dieng was also bottom 30% for us in 24/25 and I thought he did an okay job too.

If we could guarantee finding the next Pandur for £2m then I'm all for it .... but we could just as easily end up blowing £4m on the next Bazunu, or taking a risk on a GK from Europe.

We have so many positions that potentially need filling... Hackney replacement, Targett replacement, backups for RB, RW, CDM, probably LW and ST too... a #1 GK just isn't a priority for me.

I don't think finishing 8th would be a "hell of an achievement".
Must admit id forgotten they had expanded next year

I still think we're 3-4 windows from a squad capable of automatics. I appreciate our long spell in 2nd last season but the underlying statistics pointed to overperformance throughout that entire spell (which, judging by the final table, was accurate).

That's not to say I thought he was actually good last year, though. I don't remember any or many instances where I was thinking, "You really should have done better there.", But equally I can't remember anything amazing.

You can look at the Goals Prevented per 90 stats, and you can filter it out for people who've played by more than 20 games or whatever. It still has Brynn near the bottom unfortunately.

You can say "goals prevented" is flawed, but the thing is, the best keepers that pass the eye test, and who get the big transfers are always at the top of it. Look who's topped it the last couple of years, Rushworth and Trafford, and Peretz was top for the last 6 months, he's been unreal, replaced Bazunu who was bottom of the list and awful. Travers was unreal for us too, on the eye test and in the stats. All of the keepers that we've slated for Boro over the recent years have all got bad stats too.

No, the others' mistakes don't cause Brynn a stats problem, if anything, they give him an opportunity to make a save to make that goals prevented even better. One of the very few arguments I have that supports Brynn is that he's not actually getting many chances to make saves, but the best keepers do still make those saves when called on (so like Peretz, Rushworth, Trafford last year etc).

I just think getting a keeper for even 3, 4, 5 million would be good value, we could be buying a difference of, say, minus seven goals prevented to plus seven goals prevented. We could be buying a 14 goal difference there for 5m. To buy those 14 goals elsewhere in the pitch is going to cost a hell of a lot more money. For a striker, you could be talking 15-20 million for that. All the goals are worth the same, whether you're scoring them or keeping them out the other end.

Opinions seem pretty polarised on here about Brynn. Personally I wouldn't be against signing a replacement but it is certainly not a top priority. Brynn made a few too many mistakes, all keepers make them but good keepers make less, and unfortunately he made most of them in big games. I think at Championship level I would rate him in the top half, but not top 5 or 6. His distribution is excellent and makes plenty of great stop and is generally good on crosses, he just seems to have lapses in concentration. Andy_W mentioned Travers who I agree is a better keeper, but his t with the ball at his feet, I doubt that is what Hellberg would want ideally.

I think a 14-goal swing from a poor keeper to a good keeper should be a priority, especially for the price it might cost to get that. There's a pretty strong case it should be priority number three, after a hackney replacement and a left back.

Brynn is poor with a ball at his feet too though, doesn't look comfortable, in a team where he should look most comfortable (a keeper should have it easy with us), also slow off his line and his long kicking is really inaccurate (and he does it too much). I think he gives the ball away more than anybody else on our team, and he barely has it.

His best attribute is his ability on crosses, but he's only catching one per game, so it's not even worth thinking about.

Other than Morris/Hackney - Which of our players can you genuinely say improved during the season? - They all had purple patches and poor runs of form, same as Brynn.

Brynn has improved year on year. He was playing in Scotland, then L2, then L1, now the Championship in (almost) consecutive seasons.
You can't get a much better proof of improvement than moving up levels of the pyramid.
He's only been given one season at this level - and based on his historic improvement year on year, it would be stupid to not give him another one (in my opinion).

The problem from Brynn's perspective is it's very easy to forget his good form at the start of the season, due to the few mistakes he made at the end of it (play-off final being one example).
It's much easier to remember a GK's mistakes than a GK's "anything amazing" because the amazing rarely happens, and what's expected is overlooked...

Comparing him individually to Trafford or Rushworth doesn't work - They were part of teams which dominated the league, had the best overall defensive records, and finished #1.

If you compare Brynn to Pandur:
Brynn has saved a higher % of shots with a xGOT of higher than 0.5 - 26% vs 24%.
Brynn has also saved a higher % of shots between 0.3 - 0.5 - 78% vs. 76%.
And they've both saved 97% of shots with a xGOT of below 0.2

The weird anomaly in the results is shots with a xGOT of 0.2 (I rounded, so it's between 0.15 and 0.24).... Brynn has only saved 52% of these which seems shocking - Pandur has saved 89%.

But when you look deeper at these actual shots, they include:
Norwich in August - 0.18 xGOT - shot from outside the box, took a deflection off Jones.
Watford in November - 0.21 xGOT - screamer from outside the box, I don't know how Brynn could have saved it.
Both Southampton goals in the play-offs also fall into this category - Brynn might have been able to do better, but Charles goal was definitely a poor-cross, not a good-shot.

They also mostly came in games we won - so it would be interesting to see a stat on how many of the "goals prevented" equated to "points won/lost". I don't think it would be many.

You mentioned keepers who get the big transfers - and then getting a keeper for 3,4,5 million would be good value - but Brynn is currently the 3rd highest value keeper in the league.
