25 Man Squad

Other than Morris/Hackney - Which of our players can you genuinely say improved during the season? - They all had purple patches and poor runs of form, same as Brynn.

Brynn has improved year on year. He was playing in Scotland, then L2, then L1, now the Championship in (almost) consecutive seasons.
You can't get a much better proof of improvement than moving up levels of the pyramid.
He's only been given one season at this level - and based on his historic improvement year on year, it would be stupid to not give him another one (in my opinion).

The problem from Brynn's perspective is it's very easy to forget his good form at the start of the season, due to the few mistakes he made at the end of it (play-off final being one example).
It's much easier to remember a GK's mistakes than a GK's "anything amazing" because the amazing rarely happens, and what's expected is overlooked...

Comparing him individually to Trafford or Rushworth doesn't work - They were part of teams which dominated the league, had the best overall defensive records, and finished #1.

If you compare Brynn to Pandur:
Brynn has saved a higher % of shots with a xGOT of higher than 0.5 - 26% vs 24%.
Brynn has also saved a higher % of shots between 0.3 - 0.5 - 78% vs. 76%.
And they've both saved 97% of shots with a xGOT of below 0.2

The weird anomaly in the results is shots with a xGOT of 0.2 (I rounded, so it's between 0.15 and 0.24).... Brynn has only saved 52% of these which seems shocking - Pandur has saved 89%.

But when you look deeper at these actual shots, they include:
Norwich in August - 0.18 xGOT - shot from outside the box, took a deflection off Jones.
Watford in November - 0.21 xGOT - screamer from outside the box, I don't know how Brynn could have saved it.
Both Southampton goals in the play-offs also fall into this category - Brynn might have been able to do better, but Charles goal was definitely a poor-cross, not a good-shot.

They also mostly came in games we won - so it would be interesting to see a stat on how many of the "goals prevented" equated to "points won/lost". I don't think it would be many.

You mentioned keepers who get the big transfers - and then getting a keeper for 3,4,5 million would be good value - but Brynn is currently the 3rd highest value keeper in the league.
Hard to say improved as a lot were new, but Ayling was better this year than he was last year. Whitaker was a lot better. Conway was really good on the left, out of position. McGree was fit for more games than expected, so was Fry, so that was better.

I try and think of it this way, if I was trying to rank our players for their ability in their position, going down the list and picking who would have first, like Hackney, or who would have second, like Morris, I think Brynn's in the bottom one or two. I appreciate a couple of left who will ultimately need replacing. Anyone in the bottom 4 or not in the first team, we should be trying to improve on I think.

You can move up a level without getting better, though, he might be a good keeper in League One and then a bad keeper in the Championship, yet with the same ability.

I don't think his form was that good at any part of the season. I think in the beginning of the season we were a lot more defensive, and less committing going forward, which made his job easier. I think I posted on it a few times that I wasn't particularly happy with him. That was before the end of the season and a lot of big mistakes in the big games. The Coventry one away comes to mind, where he was stood near the edge of his box, yet he was beaten to a ball that bounced twice and the second time on the six-yard box, that should never happen. I appreciate our high line and Ayling have had some fault there too though, but even with the faults, the keeper's job is to cover for that. I think there were another couple of instances where he didn't come out either, which caused us a problem before that Coventry one. There was another one where he came out and he just got it all wrong, and I think he gave away a penalty needlessley.

Yeah, Brynn seems to struggle with longer range shots, and those down on his left hand side and should really be his bread and butter. Obviously, for most of the closer chances, I'm not expecting him to save those. Every keeper in the league is probably getting their first share of screamers, though. The idea is to make up for it elsewhere by them pulling off their own worldies. For most keepers in the top 6, the worldies are a hell of a lot more than the clangers, but I don't really remember him having many worldies, to be honest.

I wouldn't be going off Transfer Market or FotMob values, they're probably played on in some way in that he's played lots of games for a top team, or he's had lots of clean sheets because he's behind a top defence in a top midfield. His value has probably been stat padded as such. I don't even know what his value is on there, but my guess is nobody in the top 6 would be paying that much money for him.

I'm not saying he's a nightmare, he isn't, but I just see him as a big risk for a side that wants top 2, like we could have had this year. It's the same way that I'd see Strelec playing centre forward as a risk or expecting 40 games out of McGree or Fry as a risk. My assumption is we'll be trying to improve on last year, and by improving, we're going to need a stronger team and a stronger squad.

I'm not going to be crying about it if we don't replace him or get a new no 1, but there could be a large dose of "I told you so" if his goals prevent his stats and the eye test (from me) are bad again this year.

I'm the same - If Hellberg wants to replace him then I trust his judgement - I'm not that bothered either way.
I just think there's much bigger positions to fill in the team, and replacing Brynn wouldn't be a priority for me. I'd like to see him given another season.

Comparing Brynn to Trafford/Rushworth and any mention of "top 2" isn't realistic. "Is Brynn a top 6 championship GK?" should be the question, and he wasn't far off it last season based on the stats.

Per 90 Save % - 59th percentile - 9th best in the league
Per 90 High Claim - 78th percentile - 5th best in the league
Per 90 Successful Pass % - 70th percentile - 7th best in the league
Per 90 Chances Cleared - 67th percentile - 8th best in the league

My argument is that Brynn has improved season on season for the past 3 - 4 years. If he can marginally improve again on where he was last year, statistically he's a top 6 GK, which is what we need.

There's also not many keepers in the division who consistently beat Brynn on all the above stats. Pandur only beats him in 1 (High Claim). Patterson only beats him in 1 (Save %).

Vigouroux was probably the most over achieving GK statistically. If you consider teams, defenses, and put everything in - I think Brynn would have been 6th best GK overall in the league.

Another problem Brynn has with fan opinion is our style of play. Fans remember moments in games and for keepers it's like you said, clangers or worldies...

... But Brynn can only save what's put in front of him. You don't remember him saving worldies because he didn't....
Only 21 shots on target had a xGOT of over 0.7 (0.65), and only 7 had a xGOT of over 0.9 (most, if not all of these 7 will have came from the 7 pens).
Pandur as an example definitely saved more worldies, but he faced 44 shots with a xGOT of over 0.7, and 21 with a xGOT of 0.9.
He's saved twice as many and it looks good for the fans... but people forget he's also had more than twice (probably 3x) as many to save. Brynn can't control that stat.

I want to see a full team of top 6 players going into the season. Our current team is:

Brynn
Brittain - Malanda - Jones - Bangura
Morris - Hackney
Whittaker - Sarmiento - McGree
Strelec

Hackney will be sold. Conway won't start the season. We've got gaping holes at CDM (Hackney), LB (Bangura), CAM (Sarmiento/Castledine?) and ST (Strelec).
I'm also not convinced by McGree's fitness levels (he's injured again), and although when he's fit, he's definitely a top 6 player... He isn't fit for enough of the season to take the risk.
That's at least 5 positions I would replace in the starting 11 before GK - not including the lack of backup for RB, CDM, RW.

Other than Morris/Hackney - Which of our players can you genuinely say improved during the season? - They all had purple patches and poor runs of form, same as Brynn.

Do we not take into consideration Sol Brynn's ability to recycle the ball? I know it might sound crazy.. but say you replace Sol Brynn as first choice with a goalkeeper that statistically saves more shots.. but his attacking stats are down and that impacts players further up the pitch? Which ever way you want to look at it you are reducing the effectiveness of the attackers and therefore reducing their value and the value of the squad in terms of points. It probably is cheaper to build from the back.. but does that suit the type of football we are playing right now? Ivor Pandur was linked before Hellburg took charge.. is there still interest? I don't know. Can he fulfill the same role as Sol Brynn? If not.. who can and is it worth it?

I'd keep Brynn. Most of his stats back up that he was near enough a top 6 keeper last season.
Fans will say "near enough a top 6 keeper isn't good enough"... but it's a risky position to replace, Pandur is only a top 6 keeper too.

Brynn definitely has his flaws and he definitely needs to improve certain aspects of his game...
... but he's improved year on year, so there's no reason he can't be better again this season.

You've given some reasonable arguments, better than most, but I think there's a bit more to it.

xGOT is not related to the quality of the strike, it's related to where the shot is taken from and who's in the way and things like that. You can have a worldy off a 0.01 chance, just as much as you can off a 0.9, it depends where the striker's put it, but I don't think we've been facing lethal finishing.
These are the per 90 stats below. I don't think they're good reading.

His best stats are around about the 75th percentile, which gets him in the top quarter/ top 6, just.

But the problem is his best stats aren't the most relevant stats for us.
High claim, it's one per game, it's meaningless. I'd be more bothered about this though if we were getting loads of crosses thrown at us and getting peppered, but it just doesn't happen. Two of them other good stats are for penalty saves, so that's not meaning much as there's next to no data on that (1 save). Clean sheets/ goals conceded up there, but obviously everybody knows that that's partially down to the defence and the midfield, both of which we have there are probably the best in class.

62.8% percentile for passes isn't good enough for us, as a passing side, and the 26.8% for long balls is just throwing the ball away. Thirteen successful passes per game is poor as well, but I think that's because we don't have much confidence in his passing, so we were unwilling to use him in the build-up. I think if we could use him in the build-up as an extra man, then that would be very beneficial for us throughout the pitch.

That acted as sweeper stats are low, but that's really bad for us because we play with such a high line, so having a sweeper keep is really important, and sweeping is something he's been terrible at, it's worse than his shot stopping. He's got one assist, sure, but I don't want it if he's gonna give the ball away that much. We are better at building out from the back. The thing is, even if he was a good, accurate long ball kicker, then it's kinda pointless because we don't have the players that suit that anyway (we won't be playing that way under Hellberg. We're not going to be buying a Target Man giant, I don't think, as any of the ones we can afford can't play football.

The big ones are the goals-prevented and the save-percentages. You need both of those high, and because those are over so much data, they're going to be reliable. The goals prevented is the best correlation with keeper ability that I can see in the Championship, if you just go up and down the list.

Yeah, 100% we have holes to fill, we could get four first teamers for the Hackney money though, then a couple of loans on top of that. I think we only paid five or six million for Jones and Brittain combined.
So with that lot, that's break even, so we probably only need to chuck in another maybe 4 million 5 million on a keeper, and we're good, and stronger than we started last year I think (even without Hackney).

I see Strelec, Sarmiento and Bangura as weaknesses in different ways, but Brynn is only better than Sarmiento on that list if they're all match fit, but even he has a fair chance of being better next year.

Then obviously Conway is going to come back from injury, we'll probably keep fry, Bangura might be fit, and if he's fit, he's good enough. Sarmiento starting is worrying, but he's not had a pre-season. He hadn't played many games; maybe he'll be alright, I'd be picking Castledene at 10 ahead of Sarmi.

The stats are all subjective to what the coach wants the keeper to do. (You also said "I wouldn't be going off FotMob values" in your last reply but we'll let that one slide haha).

Brynn does have a very poor long ball %, but how much of that is based on the risk of the long ball? - He was one of the only keepers to get an assist last season making a long ball pass.
It's also very easy for a keeper to have a high successful pass % when most of them just pass it straight to a CB - so taking individual stats at face value is meaningless.
We don't know how many of those passes are easy passes to a CB - difficult passes to a CDM - passes under pressure - passes made after being given a poor back pass - etc...

The fairest assessment is to go on a combination of all stats given to us - and they put Brynn marginally top 6 (probably 6th) compared to all keepers (played more than 25 games) in the league.

My argument still stands that Brynn has improved year on year, he's gone from playing in Scotland, to L2, to L1, to the Championship.
If he was marginally the 6th best keeper in the league last season... and he can make "some improvement" again... that would put him at as a comfortable top 6 keeper, which is what we need.

It's not as easy to just "chuck in another 4 million 5 million on a keeper". The last 4 keepers bought for over 3 million in the Championship are:

Kovacevic - Norwich - 25/26 - worse save % and high claim than Brynn, marginally better passing %s.
Cooper - Sheff Utd - 24/25 - good stats in 24/25, but worse save % and successful pass % than Brynn last season.
Kaminski - Luton - 23/24 - very good long ball stats, 82nd percentile, but worse than Brynn in almost every other stat, inc. save % and pass %.
Dieng - Middlesbrough - 23/24 - better pass % but over double the amount of passes per game over 46 games suggests easy passing - worse high claim and save % than Brynn.
(I made it last 4 instead of last 5 because the next few were Muric / Bazunu / Hermansen who were bought for £8m - 10m~).

The options would be, stick with Brynn, who was statistically the 6th best keeper in the league last season, and has improved every year throughout his career...
.... or pay a few million taking an absolute punt on replacing him and hope for the best. I know which risk I'd rather take.

I do agree with you on all other points... Strelec, Bangura and a Hackney replacement should be 1st, 2nd and 3rd priorities.
I'd try Castledine at 10 too but I'm open to giving Sarmiento a run of games too.

If we didn't have so many holes to fill, and Brynn was our weakest player in the team, I'd replace him ... but as things stand, he's way down in my priority list.

The problem we had last season was that we didn’t have a keeper who could actually challenge him for his place. That needs addressing this summer and ideally we’d sign an improvement. Someone like Iversen would be ideal as it wouldn’t be a risk as he’s performed at a high standard in this league for a few years now.

I’d have went all out for Vitek but it looks like he’ll have a premier league move.

I wonder if the new financial regulations and the way they are calculated will have a stronger influence on where we strengthen this summer.

Whilst he's not an amazing keeper, I'd not really want to commit too much of a percentage of our spend on upgrading him when we need a starting left-back, CM and striker, plus another couple of wingers and covering CM's for the bench. I'd prioritise all of those before spending a fee on a keeper better than Brynn, if we can get one on a free after shedding a chunk of wage budget.

I have done an edit on your list to where I think it is or will be . I think Strelec or Whittaker May go or both.
IF they go - 12 / 13 places still to fill

Most likely be the same for Dieng although he has gone to Portugal so maybe he's been given another chance
