It's not a trend that's unique to Middlesbrough tbf, most clubs are burning through managers regularly now
I do sometimes wonder if the transfer window has caused the increase in manager churn. It used to be that if things weren't working then you'd go and bring a player in to fix things. Now that isn't an option during the season the only way to make a change is to change the manager. Maybe if managers could only be changed during transfer windows things would be different.

Actually a really good point that

Is the RE tenure the shortest in our history?

Modern history pretty sure it is, not sure about all time?

Depends on your definition of Agnew.

If you treat Agnew as a caretaker, Edwards is the shortest in our history, if you treat him as a permanent manager, which is clearly what Gibson wanted him to be, then he's second shortest behind Agnew.

Lot of things to blame:
- Influx of money into the game - owners losing money consistently - more immediate need to “get it right” or to stop getting it wrong.
- Transfer windows definitely a factor - judging on three transfer windows would have been 3 years 30 years ago, now it’s eighteen months.
- Player power - agents, big contracts, release clauses, players in theory have the ability to force out any manager who doesn’t chime well with them as a collective.
- Sporting Director culture - manager basically picks the team and sorts tactics. They don’t “run the club day to day” anymore, so you can in theory get rid of them without upending the full operation.
- Social media - everyone’s got an opinion and its made society more reactionary by design

I think Angew was only a temporary appointment, because I recall him staying be wanted the job on a permanent basis, unless I've misremembered?

Gibson said: "“I hope he’s here this time next season, and the season after, and the season after that.”

So I'm not sure whether he was officially interim or not.

It was only an interim role, but Gibbo said something along the lines of: “I hope he’s still here next year - or the year after.”
You don’t say that about a permanent manager - that’s supposed to be a given.
Hiwever, in light of the Edwards fiasco, I’m sure the club will now be keen to express full confidence that our next manager will at least last a month.

Exactly. Change in managers causes more chaos than losing. player mid season but clubs wouldn't want too lose an option of changing the manager if things were bad.
