3 players that’s all carrick brought in

And 2 of those on loan

To turn 21st into 4th with no Pre- season

It was a minor miracle what he did.
Take it back to 1st Jan 2023, the date he could add players from. He had already got us up to 8th, 14 points from automatic promotion and 3 from 4th place. We actually finished 16 points off automatic promotion.

Does that prove allowing him to bring in his own players was a mistake or the old addage of Lies, damned lies, and statistics is proved once again?

I am feeling down about how it all ended, it was by far an easier chance than next season looks, but looking forward to see who we can recruit to add to the squad we have plus who we sell to oil the transfer wheels and deals.

I am sure Carrick will be a draw for loan players from the Prem, but there are some big teams (and Leeds) possibly coming down, 2 from Everton, Leeds 🙏 and Leicester to go with Southampton will add spice to the league, Ipswich coming up with Plymouth and either Barnsley or Wednesdays make this coming season far tougher add to that some teams will likely be stronger, like Sunderland and Stoke and this makes recruitment far far harder me thinks.

Nothing is guaranteed including next seasons form, everyone knows that, we start again now in August.

He did seem genuinely committed to the cause after the disappointing result on Wednesday, perhaps watching Chris Wilder can teach other managers important things!

He comes across that his personal integrity is important to him. I’m cautiously optimistic about next season but it is the Championship and ultra competitive.

Carrick has done a very good job since he came, but to be fair to Wilder and Warnock I thought they did reasonable jobs too and improved the squad. Leaving better squads when they were sacked.

Warnock moved us from 52 points to 64 points and Wilder 64 points to 70 points.

The introduction of Hackney and Forss helped the team when Hackney came, but Leo also initially helped with Hackney. Akpom's recovery in late October helped turn our performances too.

Carrick has helped to get Archer and Ramsay which had added a lot of goals to the team when they are on form. I am sure he has helped to get more out of some of the other players too such as Akpom, Lenihan and Hackney.

Carrick is a very useful asset in attracting younger talented players, just as Bryan Robson was in 1995. he is associated with big fashionable clubs and England National team, known overseas, has his managerial career ahead of him, is seen to be going places.

Its certainly going to be a spicer and tougher league next year. Teams like Sunderland, Leeds(poss) , Sheff Wed (poss), Leicester (poss) will bring 2,500 fans to the Riverside. Going to Ipswich will be tougher than Wigan or Blackpool. It will also make the Championship more attractive to the media and possibly to some players.

I don’t think Carrick brought in any players, the job is someone else’s and I think it will be going to be someone else’s now too. What he has shown though is what a good coach he is. Our squad was good but it was underperforming. He absolutely transformed them.

That obviously helps get deals over the line.

What I would like to see going forwards is something that Woodgate promised: the whole club getting behind this style of progressive football from th U9s upwards. We can start recruiting players that fit the philosophy, but we can also nurture them from local talent.

One of the standout highlights of the 2022-23 season is the progression of Hayden Hackney. I d love it if there were more like him coming through!

So in the first half of the season we dropped 14 points against autos. In the second half we dropped only 2 points.
Is that not a massive improvement?

How far off the automatics were we with three games to go when we mathematically couldn't finish top two anymore? Priorities changed.

I was (trying to) being facetious. I think Boro under Carrick have been superb. How much credit should Leo get though as he switched to back 4 and gave Hackney his chance.

For more comparison Boro we're closer points wise to Sheff U when Carrick took over than when season finished. Again though stats can be interpreted in many different ways.

Yes it was a terrific turnaround that's for sure. Many people thought we had no chance of reaching the playoffs when he took over.

HOWEVER - having got to the play offs we blew it big style. At kick off on Wed night we were two games away from the Premier League. Not wishing to dismiss either Coventry or Luton because as the old adage goes 'there are no easy games' and they must be decent sides at least because they got into the play offs too. Are Carrick's Boro a better team than Coventry and Luton though? I believe they are and so did the Bookies. So with all due respect to those two sides there will never ever be a better or (relatively) easier opportunity to get Promotion. Perhaps we will get there next season or at some point with Carrick but there's no escaping it was a golden chance squandered. Last time we were in the play offs it didn't hurt so much as Aston Villa were clearly a better side so hopes and expectations were much more limited. This time it hurts like hell.

The mistake we made was settling for a draw and Coventry in the playoffs. Never looked like beating them in the league game
Eh? Settling for a draw against Coventry to set up a tie against them was a mistake because we never look like beating them, and instead we should have gone to beat them? Maybe we didn't 'settle for a draw' then!

I think this post sums up how much Coventry and Luton have been undervalued. They aren't weak opposition at all. It's a 46 game season. If you are in the playoffs you are a good championship team. The ones next year will be much the same.

We'd have played Sunderland instead had we managed a win (which we couldnt do over 3 games) and Coventry would have been left to play Luton in the other semi final

I'd argue Danks was the reason we managed to beat a few to Archer and Ramsey. I'd have both back.

He may also know another couple of villa U23 'gems'.

I think the main thing Carrick has to learn from this season is that you can’t always win a game by playing champagne style football. Sometimes you just have to find a way to win, grind out a result, and if that means abandoning some of your passing philosophy then so be it. I think we also need be a lot harder to beat, get some defenders in there that know how to defend when our backs are to the wall. For example Giles was great going forward but cost us quite a few goals too. I think against the more physical sides we also lacked a few hard men types who could dish it out and get stuck in when needed.
If we could find a modern day Nigel Pearson to go alongside Lenihan and a combative central midfielder to rotate with Howson and Hackney that would be fantastic
