Alfie Gilchrist

Middlesbrough make enquiries over Chelsea defender

Exclusive from Sky Sports News' Lyall Thomas:
Middlesbrough have been making enquiries about signing Alfie Gilchrist from Chelsea.
The 21-year-old defender has one year remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge.
He spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, making 32 appearances in all competitions.
Boro are one of a number of clubs keen on bringing Gilchrist back to the Championship next season.
He has 17 first-team appearances for Chelsea and a goal – his last in the Premier League coming against West Ham in May 2024

It's likely Rav will be on his way..... As well as Hackney and possibly Azaz (although that chat has gone quiet). Gilchrist is the profile of defender to replace Rav..... Young..... Some experience..... He's not going to play for Chelsea but 30 matches for Sheffield last season suggest he's more than good enough at this level..... I'd rather we look at this type of player...... He is likely motivated to prove himself..... Could be a good signing

Would be very happy with this. A right back capable of playing 35-40+ games next season is exactly what we need. Totally solves our current problem in that position.
He would be centre back I think it's his preferred position. Feels like a Rav Replacement.

With Brittain coming in as the right back/wing back but it's nice to know Gilchrist can fill there when needed.

I've only ever seen him play RB I think. Wonder what sort of fee they'd be looking at, can't imagine it being cheap with Chelsea regardless of how long is left on his contract.

I'm 50/50 - He played as a CB for Chelsea U21s in the same formation as Edwards likes to setup....
However, almost every time he's played for Chelsea's first team (including vs. Boro in the cup)... he's been a RB... and he played all season for Sheff Utd as a RB too.

Yeah, professionally he's been used as right a back. My opinion on that it was managers trying to shoehorn a young lad in to a team so he gets proper minutes and experience. He grew up as centre back.

If we play 3 at the back I'm convinced right sided centre back would be his best position. If we play a flat back 4 I reckon he would maybe better at right back than centre back.

Feels a good signing though as someone who can play both positions comfortably.

Yes. You can make it to the top as a 5’9 centre back, if you’re one of the best defenders to ever play the game.

How many sub 6’ centre backs are bossing it in the championship

I suspected someone would say that, why do they always do this!.....it isn't a comparison of abilities, it's evidencing that you can make it to the absolute top as a CB even at 5 foot 9. So being 6 foot shouldn't stop you being good enough to get promoted from the championship.
On the flip side, how tall was Aiden Flint? 6 4, 6 5? And he was dogsh*t for Boro.
