It’s interesting how it is the same band of brothers who have already decided that this scheme is a failure.some telling us it’s a white elephant and then refusing to explain why. For some this gvt can do no right and never will.

I’m prepared to wait and see - our area was namechecked a lot yesterday and promises made - surely this can only be a good thing. If it turns out to be false promises then by all means condem the gvt but you have to give them a chance to fail. To rule out success without giving it a try is very childlike. Let’s see how it progresses let’s see if it generates jobs let’s see if it improves the area - to claim to have the answers to all these questions now is not realistic.

So you would vote for someone who offered you nothing and spent no money on your area (re pork barrel) over someone who offered you or spent something? Interesting. If any government of any persuasion offered the opportunity to better my area they’d have my attention and support. If they didn’t follow through on their words with action then they’d find my support withdrawn. At the end of the day I’m prepared to cautiously welcome this, let’s see where it leads before writing if off because the ‘guy is wearing the wrong coloured tie’. (I voted labour by the way and have been critical of the government’s handling of the pandemic and PPE contracts etc so I’m no true blue Tory).

as for kleptocratic, possibly, but all sides can be guilty of / accused of that at one time or another.

EG interesting that the next polling station visit is in around 8 weeks. Be interested in just what will be front and centre of Houchens election literature next to the airport.

& 3& a half years won’t have too many tangible benefits or failures to discuss properly when the next GE comes around.

I hope it works for Teesside but Freeport’s and Towns funds are the Tories basically playing with us producing winners and losers rather than working to make sure all boats are rising.

I don’t disagree totally, but let’s wait and see. I would like to see all boats rising also. I’d love a truely balanced country that is neither hard right nor hard left, that has the benefit of all forefront. Extremes of anything are dangerous and as ever the most beneficial for all is usually a centre ground taking the best aspects of capitalism with the best aspects of socialism ie capitalism with conscience, but that is a wider discussion. In this case I guess we’ll find out soon enough if there’s no substance, in the meantime there’s cause for cautious optimism rather than just writing it off in my opinion. 👍

No possible about it. Look at the PPE contracts you mentioned.

I wouldn't vote for someone who offered me nothing, no. But I also wouldn't vote for the people who destroyed the area I live in the first place, have made my life much more difficult for the past ten years and are ideologically dedicated to tearing the social fabric of the country I live in.

People pretend like the tie they wear doesn't make a difference, as if ten years of austerity was some sort of freak weather event.

We had freeports until 2012. Have a look at the rules and regulations around them. There are also many, many studies & reports that you can find online if you actually want to do any research. The track record of this government's relationship with the truth and its relationship with corruption is informative. Its history in this area is informative. Combine all of those things and the conclusion to draw is really quite straightforward. It's nothing to do with partisan politics and in fact you've got it the wrong way around. It is certainly the case that too many people that have voted for this lot have blinkers on and refuse to entertain any negative view. They lied to you and broke the law to secure Brexit, performed dreadfully in its negotiation, have overseen one of the worst COVID responses in the world (both from a health and economic perspective) and been engaged in vast corruption in plain sight. But yeah, I am sure the freeport will be the silver bullet for our area. Bound to be.

The Freeports you mention from 2012 are we to assume that it is the exact same model the gvt is going to follow?
Even if we assume the gvt are doing it to win votes - the gvt are where they are due in part to northern votes, it’s 2021 now and therefore they have three years before they need out votes again - failing with Freeport’s could be one way they lose votes so isn’t it in their best interests to make it a success? I hope it is a success. If everyone involved has your view then it will likely fail but with a bit of open minded optimism who knows what it might bring.
To only see negatives in yesterday’s announcements feels wrong to me - but each to their own.
 
I have no idea what a freeport is other than what I've seen on TV - apparently somewhere to stash billions of pounds worth of art, gold, severed heads of business rivals - but I can't see how this can be bad for Redcar and the surrounding area.

Even if it does just move the wealth from one area of the country to here at least it is coming here for a change instead of leaving.

I guess having them distributed across the country will stop wealth moving from area to area.

I see negatives because I understand and have read a lot about freeports. It's not a knee jerk reaction. It's a white elephant that simply will not do what you are being told it will.

Do you think it will be bad for the area? Do you think there are any positives to it?
 
I'm waiting to hear what it will do for the area. I've heard nothing in concrete terms so far, so why all of the celebration?

What have you heard that makes you so optimistic?
 
Simply designating an area a "freeport" is not enough for it to be a success. It then requires infrastructure investment, reform in laws and planning etc to go with it.

Expecting business to provide this level of investment is the wrong way round, the government need to build the foundations first.

Just what everyone else has heard in the news. I’ve said I’m no expert. Adi seems to be so I’ve simply asked him if he thinks it will be bad for the area and if he sees any positives.
