Anfernee Dijksteel

I thought he did brilliant considering it was his first game in so many months.

I was getting flashbacks to the good times under Wilder with Dijksteel and Jones combining on the right, just needed Crooks to be on the same side.

Smith has been great for us since Carrick came in but he has been a bit sloppy recently. Does anyone know what his injury was?

Our system also relies on Smith dropping into central defence to make a 3 when Giles is pushing on. Smith's very experienced and an intelligent footballer and disciplined to know when and where he needs to be. Remains to be seen if Dijksteel has the nouse to do the same but he certainly adds pace to our defence and an attacking threat on the right that Smith doesn't have. Good to have such a strong squad really.

Imagine not having Clarke, Fry, McNair, McGree, Ramsey, Smith & Forss through injury.. but still having Lenihan, Howson, Crooks, Mowatt, Barlaser, Dijksteel & Jones

I like Dijksteel and I think he probably is a better player than Smith.

I just think Smith's leadership skills and his experience is vital for us at the moment.

Tommy Smith has rarely let us down. He's a solid pro.

They mentioned it was his ribs in the commentary last night.

I like both of them, but it’s worked pretty well for Carrick to keep the player in the position until given a reason not too. Dijksteel currently has the spot.

I think this a big part of some players games. Players like Howson are dependable but not spectacular. You'll get an 8/10 out of him almost every week. Some players are capable of 10s when things are going well and 3s when they aren't. Smith provides that tighter spread of 6-8/10 every week. Dijksteel can be stellar but he also has games where he just makes a lot of mistakes. Some managers prefer the reliability of a Smith, particularly if you already have a load of other players in your team that have that variation.

Well, I think it becomes more important the further back in the team you go.

A striker who alternates between brilliant and useless on any given day can still be a very useful asset.

However, you wouldn't want it in a defender, and certainly not in a keeper.

I do think deciding between TS and AD is a very difficult call though. I lean slightly towards AD, but fully accept that TS has taken his opportunity very well, and I haven't had a problem with him being in the team

My opinion. Smith is more of an old school solid right back. Loves a tackle and the battle, a bit more aggressive, puts a decent cross in.

Dijksteel probably a better modern day footballer, wouldn’t necessarily call him an attacking fullback but he does seem to have a knack of going on marauding runs. Not as aggressive or strong in the tackle, and seems to win more tackles by way of recovery.

Fair summary. They both have strengths and weaknesses.

And for a championship side are both good options.

With the injuries at the back could we go full Brazilian and play giles and jones as attacking full backs and Dijksteel as centreback with lenihan. Carrying on the Brazilian anaolgy we have a ballplaying keeper and a dunga like holder in mowatt

Smith makes runs of the ball to create space for others week in week out. That, I suspect its why he is preferred. A much smarter footballer than dijksteel.

I think its more he grabbed his chance when Diijksteel was injured and Carrick feels its his shirt to lose

Diijksteel can also slot into central defender position if required sure we will see him again before the season is out

Smith has struggled for a few weeks against pacey wingers, time for AD to have some game time, better player for me
