Anthony Taylor attacked by Roma fans

Must say I've never ever been that annoyed at a refs performance that I've wanted to wait in the Riverside/Ayresome car park after the match to abuse them. FFS 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Takes a very special kind of bellend to do this .....and certainly these Ultras are in that category.

No doubt UEFA will take this matter very seriously and fine them €500.

Big fan of a refs strike across the board, all levels over a weekend👍

Horrible for Taylor

There is a bigger problem here.

Ref’s have the power (and I’m talking generally, not about this game) to sort this out.
They can give a yellow, then a red for any player who gives them abuse.
For reasons unknown they rarely do this.

Season after season we hear about a ‘clampdown’ - it never happens.

If they use theit powers this kind of nonsense will eventually stop - players will stop abusing the ref and the heat will be taken out of it.

My kids think the ref is against us every week. But they're kids. I'm always trying to explain that it's just perception because they want us to win. And then I'll hear grown men around us saying the same things as they are. Amazes me.

The refs' own associations don't support them. I was sickened to see Howard 'look at me' Webb chucking his members under the bus in pursuit of personal publicity recently. I'd absolutely love it (Keegan style) to see refs sending players off right, left, and centre, abandoning games etc until the players learn to behave. The laws are already there. If they show solidarity with each other they could force through a change in behaviour.

It would happen quickly too.

A few yellows then reds for being abusive towards the referee, coaches sent off for screaming at the 4th official etc and it would soon stop.

Players and managers do it because they know the can get away with it, if it becomes clear they can't they'd change their ways pretty soon.

I think refs - at the higher level - are under so much scrutiny any mistake will get them demoted, demonised and almost ridiculed.

So they have this kind of "playing it safe" mode where they allow abuse, players surrounding them etc as if they (correctly) dished out 4-5-6 yellow cards at a time they will more than likely be MoTD main discussion point.

Powers that be need to step up and help them, even if it's retrospective action.

There are some fans on this site who slam a ref before a ball has been kicked

‘Not this ref again’ etc

Some fans think every game the ref has a bias against us, and it’s tedious
I always check who the referee is before a game and like to know our record against them. There are undoubtedly some referees I do not like to see refereeing us, Stroud, Eltringham, Whitestone, Ward immediately spring to mind. Mainly because we have been on the end of some very poor, game changing decisions from them in the past, Some like Stroud are the gift that keeps on giving. However, it is not because I think they are biased against the Boro, it is because they get some big calls wrong far too often. I also criticise where we benefit from a rank decision too mind.

Referees do have the hardest job in sport, in any sport, not just football. I am all for football introducing a system of sin bins where players serve a 5 minute spell on the sides instead of a yellow, but if they repeated abuse, in the game, a straight red. Only the captain should have the right to question an official. I would also have a totting up procedure of sin bins leading to a ban. Mike up referees so we all can hear the abuse from the players too. I would also hit the player where it hurts, in their wage packet. Every time a player is abusive to a ref he should have to donate 20% of his weekly salary to a local charity of the club he plays for.

As for the abuse Taylor got away from the pitch, that is a criminal matter and the full weight of the law should be thrown at any fan abusing anyone. I actually think abuse inside football grounds is far too common, wrong and we as paying customers tolerate it far too readily from those around us. It is fairly endemic and is increasingly spreading into wider society.

i think it's more than that. They dont dish out the cards for it because the expectation from the governing bodies is for them not to do it. They get assessed all the time dont they? If they should be giving out cards for it but aren't they'd be marked down surely?

what it needs is for governing bodies to set their stall out clearly. Only the captain should be able to approach the ref. Immediate yellow for anyone else. Swearing at the ref an immediate red. If its made clear thats whats going to happen then I've no doubt refs would enforce it and the behaviour would stop PDQ.

they could solve most of these issues overnight but they won't because most of the suits running the game daren't upset big clubs or big name managers or players.

I don't know why they don't do it - so used to it they let it slip unless a player is right in their face for a prolonged period?

Think you are absolutely spot on with the PL being a brand, an entertainment business. Don't want their star performers not playing because of some uppity referee upholding the laws of the game.

Cheating and total lack of respect for referees has crept in unabated over the past 2-3 years and, totally agree, needs stamping down asafp.

But the big rules involve goal kicks and not having to have the ball go out of the 18 yard box. Wow. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

And don't get me started on tactical fouling and faux head injuries........grrrrrrrrrrr🤬🤬🤬

Remember when they used to move free kicks ten yards forward for dissent? Why on earth did they stop that? Wasn't exactly a magic bullet but it was at least a step in the right direction.

Paranoia is one thing but let’s not be naive here as there are plenty of refs that don’t like certain sides or manages and vice versa.

I know for a fact that after one boro away game the ref went into the home team dressing room after the game and had his top autographed for his son.

After the Arsenal game semi final the ref went back home on the arsenal coach apparently as he was on the way ok it’s nothing but it makes you wonder.

The Bolton based Sunderland season ticket holder ref that can ref Sunderland.

So let’s not pretend it’s a level playing field because it isn’t.

As for NW I said at the time he’s painted a target on our back and it’s clear we are reffed differently now to when he was here.

That said nothing condones the actions of Roma and it’s supporters

Go to the first page of this forum and there a post by Zorro moaning about refs. The refs are biased against us. The press are biased against us. The commentators are biased against us. The ball is biased against us. The wind is biased against us. :D

I understand your view and yes there are some officials that don’t like Warnock and other managers, there were plenty that didn’t like Ferguson screaming in their ear hole, but it never did them much harm. You can use the fashionable/unfashionable club comparisons, but I think most make decisions based on what they think they have seen, in a split second with honest view rather than a biased one even though they get it wrong. I think it is more a competency issue with refs, some like Stroud seem to try to make it all about them, but I will agree that some refs will have grudges and unconscious bias is something we all battle with, refs will be no different, they are human after all and some managers do cross the line like Warnock with Gavin Ward I think it was at that Swansea game.

That said, you spoke of the alleged Sunderland ST holder, he was one I named above as hoping he is not our ref. In the stands we often do have better views of the action than refs. I think the issue is more to do with the fact they haven’t played the game professionally, so sometimes make mistakes, I can forgive honest mistakes, but what concerns me the most is not so much the mistake, its their frequency and the gravity of the effect. Stroud is the one I struggle the most with for frequency of mistakes. Eltringham, I do question why he is allowed to hold a ST with Sunderland yet referee Boro. I don’t think he is allowed to referee Sunderland though. I have looked back 11 years and could not see a single Sunderland game he has overseen. You say he is Bolton based, well he is refereeing Bolton games, so maybe you got those teams mixed up possibly.

As any Sunderland fan will tell you, it's not a derby.

We have fans calling into question peoples integrity based on snippets of information and hearsay

As someone else said referees are assessed etc

I wasn’t talking about Eltringham it was Jon
Moss born Sunderland Sunderland fan yet based west yorks so reffed Newcastle games.

Jose does create a very us against the world culture and does build the fans up to be like this. Being honest I though he refed the game okay. No major mistake. In the championship some refs are dire and often do feel like nutting them in but do we act on it no
