The east side of the airfield was pretty much abandoned in May 1945, after the end of the war. If you look on Google Earth the old dispersal pens are still visible. I explored quite a lot of the area years ago. I found air raid shelters, bomb dumps, and maintenance sheds all over the place. Every thicket was hiding something. There were ammo belts, bits of propellors, bits of bullet riddled fuselage just chucked away where the ground crews worked.

This is the area where the cargo village is going to be built. It's a shame because it's a real window into a WW2 bomber base, but I guess you can't stop progress. It's a great opportunity for someone to survey it properly before it's gone.
