I visited Catania and Augusta when I was in the RN. A really nice place, Catania. The locals are quite short in height and stature, which is a bit odd at first, but they were very friendly. The trip up Mount Etna is interesting, and some of the surrounding villages are very Godfather like, especially on Sundays during church time!

Head straight to Taormina and book at

Amazing hotel with great views for us oldies. Nice walks around the town and easy access to the little villages around Etna.

It doesn't seem to want to deal with my phone. I'll look at this later on my ipad. Cheers

I asked the same question last month. Thread linked. I have booked a week just out of Taormina to avoid the cruise ship brigade in Naxos Guardini which is a 10 minute cab ride away. The success of The White Lotus based in Taormina will make it very popular this Summer.

Another vote for Siracusa. Loads of history to discover. The small island of Ortigia, attached to mainland Siracusa by road bridges, is very similar to Valetta. It's a great place to stay.
