Anyone know the rules

Did anyone else see this, towards the end of the game today Lenihan went to congratulate Steffen for catching the ball under pressure, he went to give him a high 5/Pat on the back, it didn’t go to plan however and Lenihan just ended up putting his hand on the ball while it was in Steffens hand.

Should that be handball? Clearly a mistake but the ball was in play. Just wondered what the official rule on that would be?

It doesn’t really fall into any of the handball offences in law 12.

Not deliberate.

Not made his body unnaturally bigger to block anything.

Difficult to see how that’s a handball offence.

One of the handball rules I believe is “travels a distance” ie the trajectory of the ball has to be altered in some way. So it may not be illegal.

It’s handball, would he treated the same if you thought it went out for a throw and picked the ball up by mistake.

This sounds like a good problem for the 'You are the ref' cartoon strips. Two players having a tiff, the ball is intentionally knocked from the hands of their own keeper...

Need to send Lenihan back to Blackpool for that if you ask me, promotion is fine margins and although we got away with it today, the sanctions for a small town in Yorkshire could be massive.

It was sarcasm, jeez. Lighten up. There’s nobody more respectful of officials than me.

It is an offence if a player:

  • touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

Is there any reason he needs to be congratulating Steffen whilst the game is going on? Not at all. I didn’t see it but if it was as above then I’d expect a penalty to be awarded.

You seriously think a high five going wrong and a player accidentally touching the ball with his hand falls into that definition? That he’s ‘made his body unnaturally bigger’?

Or do you maybe think that this part of the law is for players blocking shots? Hmmm. I wonder 🤔

Probably a good job you’re not a ref!

Chuba Akpom’s celebration attracted a yellow card.. did he he HAVE to be given a yellow card and has anyone ever been sent off purely for celebrating goals?

I remember a player recently receiving a second yellow for taking their shirt off after scoring (at the world cup?). Don't know what the first one was for.
