Archer when defending corners.....

How would you deploy him when we're defending a corner?

  • Halfway line to give us an out ball and the opposition something to worry about.

  • We need numbers in the box, keep him back.

I'm in favour of at least 2 on the halfway line to make the attacking side keep at least 2 back and make the box less crowded.
One pacy forward back normally leads to two covering. I think with Coventry and (fingers crossed) Luton, going a bit more direct and putting balls forward and into the box, trying to utilise Archer a bit more to give them something to worry about could be beneficial.

Although (I assume) the numbers don't lie and over a season having everyone back comes out on top?

Yep, I imagine the numbers have been well and truly crunched.

Not having anyone up top when we are defending a corner annoys me. Not as much as short corners, but it's still annoying.
If I was a manager that would basically be my philosophy. "Little fella - you stay up top when theyve got a corner, no F***ing about when we've got one. Now get out there and enjoy yourself".

Whatever our Head Coach deems appropriate, as he knows best. Apparently he may contact Sir Alex occasionally too don’t ya know. I hope he stays in touch with Uncle Tony though too, as he understood the region so well.

The halfway line might be a bit excessive maybe 35 yards out but far enough our that it pulls out a couple of their players.

I’m sure most teams do this now (keep everyone back) as the data suggests you very rarely score on the break from a corner but you are very much more likely to concede from a corner so it makes sense to pack the box out and try break from there

You're primarily defending so concentrate on that. Best case the ball is not getting accurately played in his direction. So whatever seems best for the situation. If you drag their players out of the box by moving yours up field is it actually better? You're creating more space potentially in there.

I’d always have an outlet from any corner, esp a player like archer who is better deployed in the attacking role as mean hey have to keep one back as well

I thought the data suggested that you actually score **** all from corners.
3-4% chance of scoring from them apparently (though for us I'd divide that by 5)

Breakaway goals by the defending team I can't find stats on, but I imagine it's less than 1 in 300 (or 0.3333%) I use this figure as it makes it statistically less than a tenth of the chance the team awarded the corner has for scoring from it, for the defending team to break away and score themselves, ie on paper not worth taking the risk of one of the 10 outfield players out of the defending equation? Can appreciate this may alter slightly if one of the team is of TLF or even Billy Bremner proportions however.

I'm trying to think of occasions when goals have been scored on the break from a corner.

All I can think of is Ramsey vs Reading; on that occasion, he was defending in the area, actually cleared the corner, and still made it all the way up the other end to put it in the net.

What about Akpom against Watford when Archer broke away - was that from a corner which the keeper gathered?
