Asteroid 3 times the size of The Empire State Building to Pass Earth Today

The closest we will be to an asteroid crashing into Earth happens today. Not to worry though as it is only a mere 1.2 million miles away. If it had been in course for us it would have been catastrophic.

The other good news is we won’t see another one in our lifetimes.

Unless there is one we haven't seen yet. There are too many objects to track.

Really cool link though

I suppose 1.2m miles is a cats **** hair in astrological terms?

Wheres Bruce Willis these days, just in case?

I read a similar article a couple of months ago with a shocking headline. Something like... Giant asteroid to pass very close to earth. Now in astronomical terms 1million miles is very close. In terms of damaging earth its a long way. 4 times further away than the moon.

Only hits earth every 600,000 years, but no mention of when it last did. Thanks article (y)
This one does not hit earth every 600000 years, it can only hit us once! It's saying the earth is hit by a large asteroid on average every 600000 years. Apparently the last big one was about 13000 years ago. That doesn't mean we can't be hit by one tomorrow mind.

I saw a Ladbible headline on this particular asteroid that stated "asteroid to skim Earth's atmosphere!" While then going on to state that it will pass 1.2 million miles away.

Not sure if it's clickbait or if their "journalists" are just really that thick.

It may have been the same one I saw, I can't remember. I opened the article, read the million miles and went to look at porn instead.

I was being facetious, but thanks for the info.

Not an asteroid thankfully but the Middlesbrough meteorite that struck the earth near the Whitby railway line, somewhere behind Roseberry Park (ex St Luke's Hospital). It would have given a nasty headache if the workmen has been in its path.

The Middlesbrough Meteorite is on loan to the Dorman Museum and until the storms struck in December there was a light installation on the roof of the museum pointing to where it now lurks upstairs in the museum.
