Attacks on and criticism of referees, how about we lead by example?

Lots on the referee thread saying (rightly in my view) that people shouldn't be having a go at referees, accusing them of bias, incompetence etc. This fuels a culture where fans and managers end up feeling that attacking and abusing a referee in public is acceptable.

How about we show the way on here by agreeing that for next season criticism and abuse of referees is off limits?

We accept their decisions and move on, whether that decision goes for or against us.

We'd like players and managers to do this. Can we?

Bit of a difference offering an opinion on a message board to verbally abusing one in person. So I won't be taking part. Managers and players are where it should start. They're the people who are influencing attitudes. Mourinho was as guilty of inciting the abuse as Trump was the riots at the Capitol. That's where the first action should be taken.

As for message boards - you going to give up complaining about MP's because some get treated awfully? That feels like as daft as a suggestion as you have made above.

Not for me.

They are paid well to do an, admittedly difficult, job. Some do it well a lot of the time & some don't.
Standards have improved massively since I started watching football but they aren't perfect & when they make a mistake they should face criticism.

Abusing someone in a car park or an airport after the game is nonsense though.

Complete agree 👍

Folk don't as they realise by questioning officials they may intimidate them into making a favourable decision.

Rugby leads the way on this. Absolute respect for officials.

Personally I think people who shout at officials (I include myself in this) lack a bit of emotional intelligence. They'd be the first to crumble / kick off if someone questioned them in their line of work

Good call.
Will it be official board policy?
With any criticism of the ref leading to huge threads on how out of order the criticism is, how the poster needs to do better, then their political leanings and stance on brexit will be questioned. Eventually the thread will be pulled and at least one poster will be put on the naughty step.
Yeah, sounds a great idea.

lol

If the ref drops a clanger then I will certainly mention it.

That is a million miles away from assaulting a ref at an airport. There isn't a sport in the world where the ref's decisions aren't scrutinised. Even golf has its share of (whatever they call the ref in golf) criticism. Golf!!!!
Words can sometimes escalate into actions.
Can a post on a social media embolden a parent to abuse a young referee at their son's football?
It is tricky stuff.

You honestly think it is a good idea to stop people questioning or discussing referees' decisions on a football message board?
Have you gone mad?
