Attendance figures

After our near neighbours ( who don’t care about us but bust a gut to insist it’s not a Derby game), our numbers stand up pretty well for a small club in Europe. Outside the Mackems we have the highest attendance for our Boxing Day game, with the home game against Sunderland also up there as well. Pretty impressive after many years of Championship football and encouraging for our return to the premier league next season.UTB

Sunderland fans were discussing our crowds on their board the other week. Some were saying they feel we should average higher crowds, claiming that we have a massive catchment area and no clubs to compete with for support between Sunderland and Leeds.

They're all patting themselves on the back at the moment on there because they have the highest crowds in the division. I managed to get a couple of bites when I posted to point out that although there support is impressive, it probably does help that their cheapest adult ST is £390 (and I don't think that's an early bird price either).

You can also buy an U16 ticket for £48. One fan jumped on this to claim "We get 10k walk-ups per game!". Well after I did some research I found that they have 31k ST holders. I don't believe they've had 41k inside the stadium each game.

This is their best season for 5 years as well. They've spent 5 years in League 1 so they are taking the opportunity to turn up and see massive teams like Middlesbrough and Burnley while they have the chance. They only averaged 27.6k last time they were in the championship. We were at 25.7k that season. This year we're at 24.9k compared to their 38.3k. They'll be back to normal levels soon when the novelty of being back in the big league wears off.

It's not a Derby but they have a thread tracking the almost a sell out attendance for sunday

I see Theyve opened the 'Upper Bowl' to home supporters. I dont know if that has been the norm this season but more blocks are appearing by the day

More blocks are needed because according to them most Boro fans have mutatated to two heads, after chemical contamination over the last 100 years .

I agree there is a novelty value this season which has boosted their crowds, but to be fair to them 2017/18 was a very grim season which must have knocked their crowds. Under Peter Reid they were getting over 40k every week. They are well supported team similarly to the Boro, but in a traditionally bigger catchment area with a legacy of national success up to WW2.
