Not me friendo, I’m from the Gold Coast and pronounce it properly, brought up not dragged up me marra.
Upper working class, I eat hummus and once had a salad with strawberries in it.

I often look at old maps and place names and think wouldn't it have been lovely to have lived back then? A bucolic existence without all the stress of our busy lives, constant phone notifications, the feeling of almost inevitable impending nuclear destruction........

Then I think, no, I would have probably been toiling away in a field all day and dead by 35 so it was probably not all that great.

It isn't an 'f'.
It is a 'long s' and is still pronounced 's'.
There were complicated rules as to when and where a long s should be used. But generally not as a capital, only as the first 's' in 'ss' and not immediately before an 'f'.

Not sure about that, I see Mask. The thing that looks like a dropped f is an s . If the s is in the midlle of the word they make a 'thing' of it by over-sizing it . Which they don't do at the start or end of a word. Contrast Preston in Stockton or Moorsham and Ormesby . and it seems to work that way

I noticed Michael Portillo pronounced it the way it should be said, Redca, on his recent trip up the coastal railway.

I'm not sure that's if he was trying to sound 'authentic', or whether that dusky is the proper pronunciation?
