'Away The Lads'

Sung a lot in the 80's (maybe the 70's too?) in the Holgate and away from home. Seems to have been dropped now, but still a big fave for the Mukums (H'away the lads). Did we steal it then realise it wasn't ours so left it be?

Ha way isn’t exclusively Mackem, it’s a north east thing . I say it all the time when trying to get the wife to hurry up with something (much to her amusement as she’s from Yorkshire )

We tend to drop the h in Teesside and say ‘Oway instead , or ‘owee

I know some Whitby lads and even they say it, definitely the softer way and no 'H'.

On Byker Grove they used to pronounce it more like 'ha-weh', but with a hard second syllable if you know what I mean.

Definitely different pronunciations and different spellings on the scarves in the three North East regions. Ha'way is an old shipbuilding term for have way.

Edit: Newcastle - Haway the lads,
Sunderland - Ha'way the lads
Boro - Howay the lads

'Howay the Lads' is actually how its spelt in the tunnel at the Sports Direct Arena (will always be that to me).

Ha'way is the spelling in the seats at the Stadium of 5h1te. Reveals itself at half time most weeks.

Surely the Teesside/Tees Valley version is 'Oway the lads?

Yep. Always Oway and not Haway.

I grew up singing Away the lads, it didn’t seem to make the move over to the Riverside when we left Ayresome. I’d love it if it made a come back
