Ballon D'or winner for 2021 announced this evening

Has to be Lewandowski otherwise it's just a popularity contest (see Kaer's inclusion in the nominees).

It doesn't have to be.

There's already an award for the player that scored the most goals, there are other factors to account for too.

Lewandowski has had a brilliant 2021 after an incredible 2020, and there was no player that deserved the award more than him in 2020, but winning the league with a club that has won 15 of the last 20 league seasons is less impressive than carrying a team to an international title for the first time in decades.
At least in my opinion.

That and all the other stats.

It's always been a popularity contest though, anything that goes to a vote is going to be.

I wouldn't argue against it if either of them won though.

I wonder who would be winning club of the year?
Genuinely not sure on that one.

Obviously Lewandowski has won top scorer of the year.

A bit of a pointless stat when he has played six league games since May isnt it?
On the contrary, it is entirely the point, Messi has 1 goal in his last 8* league games stretching back to early May.

Given the Balon D'or is for individual achievement the amount of games played is entirely relevant. For example, if a player was outstanding til May and then did their cruciate and was out for a year they wouldn't even be a consideration.

He's played 7 league games since May, not 8, and 4 of those were after the vote had happened.

So he hadn't scored in 3 league games when people were voting, and had just scored 2 goals in the Champions League.

It's obviously relevant with his relative struggles at PSG, as it wouldn't even be a question if it was purely on what happened before the transfer.

Within the voting period:
Lewandowski: 54 goals and 8 assists (62 combined).
Messi: 40 goals and 14 assists (54 combined).

4 of Messi's goal contributions have been this season.
24 of Lewandowski's have been this season.

Those two new awards were a bit of a joke. Especially most goals scored.

They clearly felt they had to do something for Lewandowski knowing Messi won the Ballon D'or and the fact they robbed Lewandowski from a Ballon D'or last year.

If Lewandowski won the Ballon D'or this year, there's no chance there'd have been a new award presented.

He had a slow start at PSG but you are excluding his goals in the champions league for some reason? plus winning the copa america has to count for something. His stats for the last year are still very impressive, especially considering how bad that Barcelona team was
