Barnsley New Manager

Barnsley have appointed Sweden Under-21 boss Poya Asbaghi as their new head coach following the exit of Markus Schopp earlier in November.

Was a bit gutted for them they didn't get promoted last season after that incredible run. Sadly losing the likes of Mowatt and not keeping Dike means that was never going to be repeated.

Didnt think they would go for an English option. Seem to be a progressive board.

Worked wonders for them so far...

I think Valerian Ismael is the only relatively successful appointment they've made recently and there was absolutely nothing progressive about their football.

5 managers in the last 3 years and they'd have been back in League One if not for Wigan's administration out of nowhere.

Their last "progressive" appointment has them bottom but for Derby's deductions.

I wonder if Warnock was hinting toward them on taking on the job until the end of the season? Whatever - they haven't.

To be fair, I hope it does; Barnsley are one of the nicer clubs in the division, and it's ideal away trip distance.

Some of their recent appointments, Ismael and Struber, have done pretty well while others, Schopp and Morais, have verged on disastrous, and Stendel was a mixed bag. Given the mixed results, I don't think their approach is more effective than anyone else's.

If we're to call it progressive, surely they actually have to progress? Barnsley seem to be where they've always been: a lower half championship club who occasionally will have a good season and reach the playoffs, or a bad season in which they're relegated, and then come back up.

i called it "progressive" (ok may be some artistic licence with that word) as they have been trying something different recently rather than bring in the Warnocks, Holloways, Pardews and umpteen other journeymen ageing managers on the merrygoround. It hasn't been too successful I agree but they are still persevering with doing something different and wish them well.

Anyway as stated above lets see how this unknown gets on.

I've read or listened to many Barnsley fans on podcasts and social media and the majority wanted a 'champo experienced' manager (British).

They are getting sick of 'proggesive' young managers who know nothing about the champo.

I think they are just sick of the constant changing styles. They went from being absolute hoof ball to trying to play football with the same players.

I mean they made us look 'expansive' last season😂. To be fair he's doing the same at WBA just better players.

For me the surprise was that they went from Struber, who played good football and got them out of relegation trouble, to Ismael and his ultra-Pulis, AND did it successfully. They were an effective team last year, but to be effective despite the change of styles was a surprise.

For all I know, Asbaghi is a return to the longball game that served them well.

I’d like to bet they weren’t saying those things when they were in the playoffs last season.
